More energy drink haters

So I’ve run across a few more news sources that say one of two things: (a) Energy drinks don’t give you more energy, or (b) energy drinks may have harmful side effects and shouldn’t be consumed.

As someone who avidly drinks energy drinks, I think I can safely claim shenanigans. It takes me 3-4 mountain dews just to get through a day. That’s not even to get energy, that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me from having withdrawl headaches. So when I drink a Mountain Dew Amp Tallboy, Monster, or Full Throttle, and feel a giddy buzz of caffeine and other energy drink ingredients, I know they work.

Here’s an article I’m talking about:
Opinions divided over energy drinks

Yeah, great, you need to be a star in order to drink them.

I think the whole thing between those who think they are crap, and those who think they are essential for functioning can nicely be summarized by this article:

“Today’s 24/7 lifestyle is driving the sales of energy drinks,” the group said, using a shorthand expression for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you don’t understand it, let me spell it out for you: You don’t have to explain what 24/7 is to people who drink energy drinks. We already know. The only people that don’t are Mormons and people who hate energy drinks because they can’t handle them, and I’m not sure about the Mormons.

Why the tirades? I’m sick of old people who have never tried the drinks telling us they don’t work. I know, I know people that know, and I know people that know people that know energy drinks work. I get a better buzz than coffee, it tastes better, and, frankly, we kick more ass than you.

I actually have a theory that goes along with all of this: The Prosumer Theory of Energy Drinks. It’ll be the subject of an article in the next day or two, so make sure you check back.

Energy Drinks- Firstly I am not a huge fan of corn syrup or sugar. Secondly I absolutely love Rockstar’s Juiced and monster low-carb. For anyone arguing with energy drinks being on the market, I think it is bull! These are no different than picking up a cup of coffee and dousing it with sugar- except there are antioxidants in coffee- hm? Oh guess what! There are antioxidants in energy drinks. I consider my diet well balanced, it is nothing I am lacking in nutrition and I take my vitamin supplements daily, but when you have little ones who wake up at night your not exactly getting your full sleep. It gives me a pep whether it’s strength differs from coffee or the bright tart taste gets me motivated – I think it’s really a science. I do not like red bull, I do not drink aspartame – ewe it tastes horrid!- but for me and my Monster we are buds :)

Please know that O_o’s post is very accurate. I now have three verified cases in two friends and one uncle that have triggered diabetes levels almost off the chart! Anything you give your body in excess that it already produces naturally will send it haywire. Even too many vitamins is not good for you. That weight loss and appetite supressing that those energy drinks make you feel good about is actually killing you. “All weight loss is not healthy weight loss” Please, I am now condeming energy drinks with my employees, friends, and family as I have a good feeling we will see the results of our generation being the test dummies very soon. Mark my words.

p.s. All three cases were avid energy drinkers.

I love energy drinks- mainly V and Red Bull- but I don’t drink them daily. Only a couple of times a month, sometimes I go months without energy drinks. I used to drink them every couple of days, but I really feel better (as in I don’t have that “I’ve-been-sleeping-in-a-hella-stuffy-room-for-12-hours” feeling while not on a sugar high anymore!) and more energetic nowadays than back then, and according to my family and friends during the time I drank all those energy drinks I was rather irritating because of mood swings. Well, more violent mood swings than the usual ones that seem to come with being 13.
So nowadays I rarely drink them, and I CANNOT STAND coffee, yet I feel energetic anyways. It’s probably because I’m not depending on something to give me energy, so I don’t go into headachey, tired withdrawals from not drinking Red Bull or V. It’s awesome to be able to actually sit still and relax… although I love the taste of Red Bull and V (separately!) and the sugar high is great when it’s occasional :) .

Energy drinks are my lifeblood. I drink minimum 5 16oz Diet Rockstar’s a week and maximum of about 10. Sometimes the freaking store is out of Diet Rockstar’s because they are so awesome so I have to drink something like Monster Low Carb or Redbull Sugarfree.

Minus the sugar, what is so bad about energy drinks? They definitely are an acquired taste. What is with the, “you punk kids and your dammed caffinated beverages?! Back in my day we had to walk everywhere and drink warm milk, it was an uphill walk to and from work!” Well now we have these things called ‘CARS’ because we have the ability to do what we want because this is a free country and if we want to chug energy drinks like there is no tomorrow who is it hurting? Stupid coffee shops selling gross bean juice mixed with sugar and dairy with some ricockulous names like ‘Venti Carmel-Mocha Macciado with a cherry on top’. How about something simple and rad. Rockstar, you truly are the bestest a person could ask for in an icey cold beverage.

An occasional energy drink is fine, i am reading posts saying it will induce, “obesity, pre-diabetic hypoglycemic conditions, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, elevated cortisol, inflammatory reactions in the body, elevated LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and osteoporosis” Most of these conditions are genetic and are caused by a multitude of reasons. Sure if you drink several energy drinks religiously then all of the above can occur, but it is called “balance”, that may be the secret to life. Go ahead and indulge in an energy drink, your day to day life is filled with carcinogens and harmful substances that undoubtedly cause more harm than an energy drink. Caffeine is in a lot of things we already consume, and it is proven to have healthy effects on the body, that is why it is in a large amount of medications. It is proven to provide alertness, improve energy, reduce headaches, and increase blood flow circulation. cheers, i am drinking an energy drink right now. The rest of you retards/Mormons can shut up about energy drinks because it is quite obvious your intelligence on this subject is lacking.

One word: MODERATION!!!!!

effedforlife January 20th, 2008 6:56 am

Any other time, I would agree.. they’re not healthy but they do work! Right? I used to go through periodic addictions too. I’m a boxer… or i was a boxer. I drank a BAWLS energy drink two months ago.. just one, not the most caffeinated thing out there… and that ONE drink threw my heartrate off the scales.. I was two minutes away from dying and going into cardiac arrest by the time they got me to the ER… and i was there for three days.. since that time, I’ve been in the ER randomly 2 more times because my heart will go racing for no reason. I no longer can exert too much energy, drink caffeine, or smoke ciggs. All will through it off… I can’t box anymore or do half the shit I want because if ONE bawls.. and not a single person in the history of my family had heart problems. Don’t be so ignorant to the opposite side of things… cause I am some times.. and this is one little thing that reuined my future.

I tried energy drinks and loved them. It takes like alcohol but without the alcohol so its a cool hip drink. Bad news is it increases your heart rate which then I had trouble breathing so I am no longer going to drink energy drinks. They are very harmful to your body not to mention expensive and have too many calories.

renee August 4th, 2008 6:53 pm

I think the young generation likes energy drinks because you dont have to be 18 to purchase. And it resembles alcohol so people can drink them ANYWHERE!
I think they need to require a person to be atleast 18 to buy them since they are so bad for your health.

I definitely do not notice any difference when I drink Red Bull for example. In fact, I would say “it’s a bunch of bull” so to speak. Many times, I have had a Red Bull and gone to sleep easily to take a nap. Coffee works a little bit better as do several cups of tea, but even two Red Bulls in a row have zero effect on me.

I think the biggest problem is with kids. I have a friend who not only gives her overweight kid XS (in hopes that he’ll get outside and exercise, which he doesn’t) but also put him on diet pills! He’s only 13 years old. He had a complete break down the other night. She’s lucky he didn’t have a heart attack! The parents defend the XS drinks, but what they are missing is that their kid does absolutely nothing all day long. He plays computer games, watches TV, and sleeps! They took him off of the diet pills, but continue with the drinks. He’s way too young to be consuming Panax Ginseng and Ginko Biloba. The only herbs listed that won’t adversely affect anyone is echinacea root and astragalus root. Those are immune boosters. However, too much echinacea on a daily basis creates an immunity to it and will eventually do absolutely nothing for the consumer.

I agree with NOT YOURS… make a smoothie, eat raw fruits and veges. Balance out with proteins and carbs. Did you know that you can eat as many fruits and veges as you want, all day long, get the energy you need from their natural sugars and lose weight? You can do this and never have a blood sugar crash. Fascinating, isn’t it?!
