Yes, You Can Be Allergic To caffeine.

Some people have asked if people can be allergic to caffeine. I’m no doctor, but yes. Yes, you can be allergic to caffeine. And it’s not something a lot of doctors have known to look for. The effects of caffeine allergy look like some more severe mental disorders.

When you’re suffering from an allergic reaction to caffeine, one or more of the following things can happen: “loss of focus, intellectual deterioration, delusions, loss of judgement, and other symptoms of poisoning.” Because many people don’t properly recognize the caffeine allergy, they continue to ingest it (and why wouldn’t they?), and that can damage the brain and make things worse.

With symptoms like loss of focus and delusions and symptoms of poisoning, it’s no wonder the reaction often goes improperly diagnosed. What is diagnosed? “ADHD, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, TMJD, PMS, and other conditions.”

If your doctor diagnoses you with any of the above, and you ingest a lot of caffeine, make sure he rules that out as a cause before putting you on a lot of drugs.

If allergic to caffeine, is there any possibility of caffeine being in the air in an office that brews coffee through out the day, that could cause a reaction?

About a year ago I got up had about 3 cups of coffee and went shopping. On my way home I suffered what I thought was a full fleged axiety attack. I felt like I couldn’t breath, my hands locked up and I had pains in my chest. I made it home and called the parametics and they told me I was having an anxiety attack and to stop drinking caffiene. I have never had mental health issues and never had anxiety attacks. If I have any caffiene I immediatly start feeling nervous, tightness in my chest, etc. I have cut out all caffiene and have had no symptoms. I am very concerned with our now “age of coffee houses” It is so fashionable to carry around Starbucks cups full of this drug. They are full of teenagers on Friday nights drinking their fill of caffiene. I’m teaching my kids that caffiene is a drug like any other and to steer clear of it all together. It does horrible things to the brain and body. I wonder if the medical community will ever agree? Yes there is such a thing as caffiene allergy. It’s no joke. It is very serious and no one should be ingesting this stuff.

I think I am allergic to caffeine, because everytime I drink it, I start off with a headache then my saliva feels wierd then I get dizzy and I get into these panic attacks and my legs give up on me, and I faint. I think its the caffeine because I experimented with it and the same effects came back. I hope this will help anyone.

I found out in Jan 2009 that caffeine made my allergy worse. I have mold and grass allergies which are year round and cause great fatigue. I took allergy shots for 2.5.years and have improved 80%. I was supposed to go for five years but lost work and no longer had insurance. I discovered this when I was home on a Saturday, feeling crummy and a kid came door to door selling chocolates. I got a box ate chocolate and drank some iced tea. By the end of the night, my heart was racing, ears ringing, feeling anxious, totally fatigued. The next day I was out sick (Monday)but I went to the local drug store that night to take my blood pressure. It was fine but it felt like I was going to explode. When I returned to work, I was still scared so I decided to forgo my morning cup of coffee. The following day on Wed, I was feeling better so I drank my coffee and the symptoms immediately returned. I used to be out at least 3-4 days a month with allergy related illnesses I have only been out once since January since I gave up caffeine. I also discovered that not all chocolate. Inexpensive no name chocolate, (had a fruit kabob dipped in no name chocolate) very tasty but sent me to bed immediately with the same symptoms. I’ll grab a bag of M&Ms peanut every now and then, and no noticeable reaction but definately no teas or sodas or coffee with caffeine.

Wow! It’s great to know I’m not alone in this. This “allergy” is a recent discovery for me as I never had problems with caffeine until now that I’m 40. I break out in an itchy rash, my left hand pinky and ring finger are still cold and numb from caffeine I had three days ago, the day after I had caffeine I was in a mental fog like state, couln’t focus, and felt extreme exhaustion, it was terrible. I’ve just now recovered on the third day except for the cold numbness on my left fingers. This is the second time all of these symptoms have occurred after caffeine, and therefore along with previous rashes, I’m convinced it’s the caffeine. Bummer!

Thanks to Yvonne for the supportive words. I didn’t notice any sensitivity to caffeine until I was 40. I have cut it out completely and feel so much better. Along w/ the caffeine sensitivity, I can’t tolerate any stimulants in medicines and can’t have epinephrine when I get a shot (before dental work etc). I miss my Diet Cokes and iced tea, but there’s always caffeine free!!!

Seems I too am allergic. Took years to make the connection but if I drink a few cups a day over say 2 to 3 days I end up absolutely exhausted, fuzzy mind. If I drink way too much I end up with suicidal thoughts, etc. Glad I found out why before I did anything stupid.

My allergic reactions to too much caffeine include a puffy swollen face (especially around the eyes) that no compresses or topical creams will fix; quivering eyelid muscles, veins that immediately pop out on the back of my hands, and pain in the breasts (cysts). While working on a college thesis, I once had a caffeine attack that was so serious I had to be rushed to the hospital. I felt as if my head were exploding, and I could not even stand up straight. I didn’t know the cause and the doctors feared I was either having a heart attack or had overdosed on drugs! (Wrong on both counts). After administering an EKG and reviewing my diet for the last 4 days, the doctor diagnosed ‘cafattack’ and said I was dehydrated. He prescribed planty of liquids, no caffeine and gave me a shot of adrenaline that led to the most refreshing sleep I have ever experienced. I remember after waking up that my eyesight seemed sharper. For years after this episode, I could not tolerate any caffeine without serious side effects. Presently, I drink coffee (1 to 2 cups) and some dark sodas, but I plan to cut way back, if not completely. Reason: I am beginning to experience some of the symptoms described above and in other people’s posts.
