Yes, You Can Be Allergic To caffeine.

Some people have asked if people can be allergic to caffeine. I’m no doctor, but yes. Yes, you can be allergic to caffeine. And it’s not something a lot of doctors have known to look for. The effects of caffeine allergy look like some more severe mental disorders.

When you’re suffering from an allergic reaction to caffeine, one or more of the following things can happen: “loss of focus, intellectual deterioration, delusions, loss of judgement, and other symptoms of poisoning.” Because many people don’t properly recognize the caffeine allergy, they continue to ingest it (and why wouldn’t they?), and that can damage the brain and make things worse.

With symptoms like loss of focus and delusions and symptoms of poisoning, it’s no wonder the reaction often goes improperly diagnosed. What is diagnosed? “ADHD, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, TMJD, PMS, and other conditions.”

If your doctor diagnoses you with any of the above, and you ingest a lot of caffeine, make sure he rules that out as a cause before putting you on a lot of drugs.

I don’t get the rashes that some of you are reporting but I do feel very irritable even if I have only a few ounces of tea. I used to drink about 6 cups of coffee a day and could not quit smoking until I quit the coffee as well. I guess I was using coffee for the boost in energy while the cigarettes were for balance, and somehow the combination was just splendid. For me at least, the combo also demonstrated how powerful caffeine can be for some people. Well, I guess there was also the time I was browsing through a sort of drug encyclopedia at a university library and found that caffeine was categorized under pscychoactive drugs with chemical similarities to opiates.

Rarely drink coffee but when I do it has an immediate affect of sinus drainage and sour, bloated stomach. This is also the case when I take an Exedrin (only one). I drink about two cokes a day and have noticed consistent headaches and a white film on my tongue. I am on day 2 of fasting and taking an herbal cleansing and am feeling a little relief in my stomach. I wonder if others have similar symptoms.

I have been caffeine free for 16 months. I started getting panic attacks in Oct 2005 and at first I blamed it on everything other than caffeine – flying, work, stess etc but when I had my 3rd attack I went through everything I did on each day I took the attack and the common denominator was coffee/latte/pepsi max etc. I have been off it since and the only attack I had was when someone put some WKD into a cocktail I was drinking.
I dont mind been off the drug now as I can see the health benefits but peoples reactions when you tell them you are allergic to caffiene does be funny. Its as bad as when a non drinker of alcohol tells people they dont drink!!
Anyway best of luck to everyone and hopefully your life without caffeine will be a good one

I was never very sensitive to caffeine when I was younger. But in college, I started the energy drink binges for those long nights cramming for exams or just for an extra boost at the club. Then suddenly I started having panic attacks at school. By the third time, it finally clicked that the attacks only occurred immediately following a fresh infusion of red bull, bullet, blast or doubleshot. It was exactly as what is described as an allergy to caffeine. I’d have the intense feeling/need to get up and leave, getaway, from wherever I was. My heart was pounding and skipping beats, I felt extremely hot, couldn’t focus, my mind would race, I talked rapidly and all over the place, everything would look far away and blurry.
Obviously I stopped taking energy drinks and I never had another panic attack. However, I continued drinking green tea and my sensitivity seemed to invade here as well. Now, less than two cups of regular green tea ingested in the morning will leave me dysrhythmia jittery all day and with trouble sleeping at night. I never really thought of it as an allergy, but I guess it is and a very serious one for some people if not recognized as such or misdiagnosed.

I noticed my throat swelling and hurting and my entire mouth, including my tongue and lips, feeling dry and itchy everyday. Other than water, I consumed nothing but Diet Coke and Ice Blended coffee every day, but never made the connection. I gave up drinking everything but water for the past 2 weeks and I have been fine! Today, I caved in to my Ice Blended coffee and here I sit…with an irritated throat and itchy mouth! It’s been going on for years. I have told the doctor about it, but they always seem to diagnose everything as “stress related”! That’s it — NO MORE CAFFEINE FOR ME!

Julia February 18th, 2007 6:29 pm

Jasper & Kevin. I too believe I’m allergic to caffeine. My tongue has been swelling for years and it has become worse since starting thyroxine hormone replacement. For a while I blamed the meds…but am wondering if it is worse for the combination of thyroxine and tea…. I’m so addicted to tea that I’m having difficulty stopping drinking it.

Amazing!!! I have been struggling with SEVERE itching for the last few weeks…no rash, but skin so itchy I could rip it off sometimes. I stopped driking Diet Coke (used to drink it by the case)because my parents suggested maybe I was allergic to the artificial sweetener. Well, it worked for a few days but then I started itching again. I hadn’t had any sweeteners but I did have chocolate. That’s when I realized it must be caffeine that’s doing it. Have’nt had any caffeine and I’m doing just fine! What a relief! The doctors never would have been able to figure it out.

I’m not sure if I’m allergic to caffeine but I have certainly become very sensitive to it. When younger I used to drink loads of coke (a litre a day) and never seemed to have any problems, although I suppose my body became used to it.
Last year I went through a stage of feeling very anxious and panicky, mostly whilst at work. I would feel hot, restless, shaky, over-stimulated and my heart would race. It was an awful feeling. At first I thought it was stress-related but I finally realised most of it was actually caused by drinking tea, coffee and coke which all contain caffeine. I started to reduce my caffeine intake considerably and the anxiety went away.
Nowadays I find if I have just one cup of tea or coffee the anxiety feelings return quickly, until I flush it out of my system.
Funny how some people don’t seem to be affected by caffeine at all.

Troubled February 22nd, 2007 1:50 pm

I’ve known about my caffeine sensitivity for a couple years now but as some of you have mentioned, it’s very hard to completely quit.
I have managed to quit drinking sodas. It’s been over a year now… but that was easy compared to coffee – and it’s only DECAF!
I have one large decaf coffee on average about every other day. Randomly it seems, I have an adverse reaction to it. Mainly high anxiety, heart flutters and sweating. What a pain.
So, after saying that my psychiatrist-diagnosed anxiety is caused by stress, hormones and bad genetics, I’m ready to quit caffeine.
Let’s all give it a try! Good luck to all!

I drink a 32 oz espresso with an extra shot (so about 7 shots) just about everyday. It wakes me up, but relaxes me. Without it I am agitated and get frusterated easily! I need my coffee to function, and work, without I just want to sleep all day, and I have no motivation!

Just about 3 weeks ago, I thought I was breaking out with acne all over my forehead. I realize now that they are welts and I am probiby allergic to my addicton!! I have been drinking it anyway, because I am afraid of who I am without it!! NEVER, in a million years, did I ever imagine I would be both addicted and allergic to CAFFINE!!! CRAZY!!

The welts are small ike bites like the other member poster before, and they itch, and hurt. I am hoping it is the milk allergy like another wrote about, as well! I am perplexed!!

Before you start pointing the finger at caffeine – do you realize how acidic coffee is? 32oz a day is a lot — it’s something to think about.

Taylor March 21st, 2007 8:37 pm

I’m not sure if I’m allergic to caffeiene but whenever i drink any of it my heart always goes into an arrhythmia so what would that mean?

Tony March 29th, 2007 1:25 pm

About 5 weeks ago I started to feel itchy round my wrists I then noticed what looked like nettle stings, very red and angry, besides that they itched like hell.It can appear like lightening especially after a pot of lovely coffee, do I have to forego my coffees forever???

I am wildly allergic to caffeine. Now and then, a little bit of it makes me feel better, but I know that when I have too much of it, the lining of my nose and sinuses swell up and I have some difficulty breathing; even worse is that my vision blurs, extremely badly, and I get really tired. I also am ultra-depressed later. When I’m smart, I avoid caffeine, or only take a few sips (I am addicted – the first few sips make me feel great psychologically). I’m 29 and had minor symptoms from this throughout my life, but have gotten unbelievably bad in the past couple of years. Other allergies are kicking in severely too… I’m getting allergy shots for things like pollens and hope that once those allergies are under control, maybe ones I’m nt being vaccinated for will be better too.

Im in my mid 20’s and I think I’m allergic to caffeine. I used to drink strong coffee by the bucketload at university to help me keep working and then last year I started having a reaction to drinking any caffinated drinks.
My symptons seem different to everyone else; I don’t get any rashs or anything itching but it does make me feel very sleepy! My head and neck feel very hot and I get really drowsy. When i tell people I can’t drink coffee anymore because it sends me to sleep they think I’m taking the piss! I really hate it because I love the taste of coffee and I can’t really drink it at work anymore but if im having trouble sleeping a nice cuppa coffee sends me off! Good night all!

I seem to have an allergy to tea but not to coffee. I don’t know about the caffeine, but the tea irritates my mouth. My tongue gets a burning sensation from drinking tea. It is an irritation. A while back I had a long period of a sore tongue while living in a Yoga Ashram. After I left, the sore tongue went away. Then I drank some tea it came back! But I don’t get the burning or rawness from coffee, just tea, so i don’t think its caffeine. But with all the searching on the net, I could find no one else who also is allergic to tea with the effect of a burning/raw tongue/mouth.

I was 13 when my doctor diagnozed me as being allergic to caffeine. I had my first migraine at 5 years old. I still remember the pain. It was the most awful thing I had ever felt. We went to doctor after doctor trying to figure out what the problem was. I got my eyes checked because of the blurry vision but they said my eyes were fine. I went to specialists and everything. And finally when I was 13 my doctor said asked me how many cokes I drank in a day. It was about 3-4. He told me that he suspected that I was allergic to caffeine and told me to stay off the stuff. Well I did and sure enough the headaches stopped and my vision cleared up. Now, being a chocoholic it’s darn near impossible to give it up. But even when I have a bit as a treat I still get the migraines. I am now on Imitrex for the migraines so I can still have chocolate from time to time. Just got to take the Imitrex to stop the pain! :)

For Paul… Black tea irritaes my mouth and throat. It makes my tongue sore and swollen. It seems to be associated with a flare of fibromyalgia. Green tea doesn’t seem to be as bad. Coffee is fine. Oddly enough diet coke is fine also. I’m going to try switching from Lipton to Kurchika. Maybe it’s something in the tea bags?

Chad May 11th, 2007 1:40 pm

Coffee usually makes me sleepy. My eyes become so heavy , I can hardly keep them open, my mind just wonders and I daydream a lot. I can’t focus on much for any extended period. I begin to feel cold if in an air conditioned area, especially on the tops of my hands. However, my heart may beat faster than normal. Energy drinks don’t even do that to me. Tea, does not do this to me, I have always loved tea. Coffee, I don’t know what it is but it just turns me into a zombie.
