Quite Possibly the Most Powerful Energy Drink Ever

Seriously, the drink may mean the end of this blog. In the “before time,” conversations generally went a little something like this:

So, what’s a good energy drink in terms of strength?
Well there’s a lot to choose from, based on caffeine content, taurine, ginseng, green tea extracts…
Well… what if I’m just interested in caffeine content?
Well just go to The Caffeine Database and look around!

The point, probably lost, is that there’s a lot of drinks, in varying sizes and caffeine contents, that also contain a lot of other things.

So then this new thing came out. It’s called VPX Redline Fat Burner. Amazon is lacking a little information, so here’s a little more:

Check out this freaky scientific VPX breakthrough: RED LINEĀ®: is the only matrix ever developed to shred fat through the shivering response in the body. By shivering the body burns huge amounts of stored bodyfat for energy in an effort to keep the body warm. That’s not all! In addition to shivering, you’ll also be sweating up a thermogenic storm. The combined mechanisms of these two processes results in unparalleled fat loss!

What fun. Now, it’s pretty obvious looking at the ingredients that there’s caffeine. But get this: all of the aforementioned goodness, and the serving size is FOUR ml. About one TENTH of an ounce. The whole bottle has 240 ml, or 60 servings. Basically, a bottle of this, less than the size of a normal can of coke, WILL kill you. This is nothing to be playing around with.

I have friends. Not just normal friends, mind you. The kind of friends that voluntarily live on the streets. The kind of friends who, when drinking, race to forgetting. The kind of friends who take caffeine pills, ephedrine pills, and asprin.. all at once. One, in particular, drinks and consumes over a gram of caffeine daily, to stave off the headaches. So you know this is a serious review:

oh yeah, it’s definately 90% caffeine. the aftertaste is unmistakeable. the best part is that since i didn’t have my normal “dose” this morning, i probably won’t actually feel sh*t.

[10 minutes later]

the caffeine kicked in a lot faster than i expected. though in retrospect, it normally does when it’s in syrup form and tastes like ass.

feel oddly cold too. took me a minute to realize that while i still was warm, it was that ’shiver’ reflex kicking in. it’s a lot like when
you get a chill at the back of your neck, but somewhat continuous.

So what’s in this magical bottle of awesome? Caffeine, Green Tea, Yerba Mate, 5-HTP (5 hydroxy-1-tryptophan), cAMP, Yohimbe, Evodiamine, and Vinpocetine. And a few other things.

I know, I know, so here’s some more info:

cAMP is cyclic adenosine monophosphate. It supposedly “sparks many intercellular processes.” Whatever that means. Increased concentrations supposedly raise thyroid horomone levels, and help fat burning (would help explain why it’s in a fat-burning supplement).

Yohimbe is a bark extract from a tree in Africa. It’s considered a natural aphrodisiac, and sold here to treat imotency, dialate pupils, and stimulate fat loss. It can also mess with your blood pressure, so watch out.

Evodiamine is derived from some Chinese fruit called Evodia Rutaecarpa. Supposedly burns fat.

Vinpocetine is an alkaloid derived from some periwinkle plant. It is used in Europe, Japan, and Mexico to treat crebrovascular and cognitive disorders. Some people claims it elevates metabolism, but with no proof.

And the interesting one in the group: 5-HTP. I made sure to spell it out, so the smart ones in the group have already figured out the key: Tryptophan. It’s the same stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy, and there’s scientific evidence of it. The 5-HTP compound is sometimes used to treat mild depression since, somehow, it can increase serotonin levels. It can also affect appetite, which may be part of why they put it in here. The other part? When you’re jacking up a drink with this much caffeine, you’re going to get jitters and “scatterbrain.” This may actually cut the disconnected thoughts out and allow you to think normally, but still give you the energy effects of caffeine. Awesome.

Apparently you can buy this stuff at places like Super Supplements, GNC, and even some 7-11s. The concentrate isn’t something you should take a guzzle of. Or even a large sip. If you search on the internet, you can see some people who took the recommended dose, and started blacking out towards the end of a workout. Blacking out. 4 mililiters. Damn. There’s also a ready-to-drink version (I would bet that’s the one at 7-11), and half a bottle is all that’s recommended. Pay attention to it. People are comparing the 1/2 bottle to a full hit of ephedra. Unless you’ve done that before and know the effect it has on your body, don’t go doing anything macho with this one. Go do that with redbull.

Just for poignant measure, look at this review:

I recently purchased the liquid form of redline at a local 7 Eleven store.

It was the first time I have ever drank an energy drink that had such an affect. With in a few minutes , I started to sweat and shake. Being familiar with the effects of narcotics, I must say the feeling felt a lot like cocaine feels.

The most disturbing trait is that my penis shriveled up like I just got out of the icy cold ocean. I can’t help but think that this product will be taken off the market. The effects are too strong for some minors and may not be safe for people on certain medication which are yet to be known.

And this one:

I tried Redline today while heading to work. I am a huge fan of RedBull & Diet Rockstar. I am 33 years old & in excellent condition.

Having not read the warning label I drank the whole bottle within 5 minutes. Within 10 minutes I was blacking out behind the wheel & shaking uncontrollably. I pulled over at a gas station — I was having difficulty in swallowing and could not stand, breathe or see straight.

I could not even walk for the convulsions. A bystander called the paramedics. Needless to say – my blood pressure was sky high & I thought I was on my way out.

I feel this drink is extremely dangerous & should not be on the market. There needs to be a very visible warning label not to drink the whole bottle for beginners. It has been 5 hours now & I still do not feel normal.

This drink could seriously kill someone if not informed.
I am sorry but I will never drink this again nor recommend it to fellow peers.

If you like it, share it..

Horrible! November 4th, 2007 6:35 pm

My boyfriend bought this and I liked the apple smell so I had a sip, he drank a half bottle. My stomach was a little upset and I couldn’t figure out why, he was nauseous and miserable the rest of the day. He drank another one a few days later and was throwing up all night! We like energy drinks but this one should be taken off the market!!

katie November 5th, 2007 2:21 pm

Okay so i chugged half a bottle and there was no difference at all. i don’t know why everyone is so spazzy about it. it’s your fault you chugged three bottles and missed the warning. all over the box it’s like POTENT! CAUTION lol but energy drinks don’t do anything for me.
yah but now when i eat blueberry muffins and burp it tastes like redline. yumm

If you’re going to drink this, respect it! Don’t be a dip, don’t think, “I can drink the whole thing, no problem!” You might be able to, or you might not.

I like caffeine, a lot. I drink tons of coffee. To this day, a double or double-double espresso remains my favorite “energy drink” and drink with dessert. I have more than enough experience, unfortunately, in dealing with genuine central nervous system stimulants, not just caffeine, which is really a pretty mild substance. Personally, I have no problem at this late date in my mild caffeine addiction drinking a cup or two of coffee, and then going to bed and sleeping. So, I didn’t approach Redline with too much nervousness, although based on the reviews, I did approach it with respect.

I bought one bottle, drank a quarter, waited a couple hours, drank another eighth, waited another hour, and then drank up to the halfway mark. Sure enough, I at least felt enough that I could see how more Redline would cause the bad effects people talk about here.

Lets get some things straight. This isn’t amphetamines or coke. Not even close. Those are pleasant if addictive substances. These effects from Redline are not very pleasant, although I could see how it would be effective for training and/or weight loss, as advertised. Anybody who buys this for a “buzz” ought to have their head examined. Yes, it gives you energy, but it also messes way too much with blood pressure, IMHO. I checked mine at the height of the “energy” buzz. I do have borderline high blood pressure, but with Redline it was flat-out high at 135/90. Not dangerously high, but high. This stuff definitely gives you the shakes, too.

Really, I think much of the cause of the complaints come down to two ingredients in the drink — the Yohimbe and the Evodiamine. The vasodilator effects of the Yohimbe could have more of an effect on somebody in great shape than an out-of-shape, overweight person such as myself, which could also add to the complaints about the effects. Seriously. Same with the Evodiamine and its thermogenic effects. The more you have to lose, the less effective it will be, of course. If I had known more about Yohimbe prior to buying the Redline, I probably wouldn’t have bought it.

If VPX dumped the Yohimbe and Evodiamine from it, they’d probably have a nice little energy drink here, sort of like BSN’s Endorush, which by the way, is a really nice product. Endorush also supplies the energy but without the hints of bad effects I felt with Redline.

Fozzie November 7th, 2007 11:39 pm

Maybe I ought to qualify that last paragraph, above, slightly. Endorush does not supply as much “energy” as Redline, but it does give you enough of a kick, and not a bad kick but a slight and pleasant one. Given the choice between Redline and something that won’t make me feel ill but comes with less energy, such as Endorush, then I’ll take the Endorush.

spinyl November 16th, 2007 10:29 pm

Don’t be fooled by the VPX sock puppets in the comments: no respectable retailer should be selling this stuff, warning labels or not. Maybe some people like it and think people who don’t are “wussy”, but I can tell you that neither your tolerance of other drugs nor your physical condition can predict how your body will respond to this mix of chemicals.

This was my first bad trip ever, and that’s after many years of getting my kicks in many dimensions with LSD, ecstasy, quaaludes, opium, coke, oxy, adderall, dust, shrooms…not to mention cannabis from every time zone on the planet. Redline didn’t make me puke, but I wish it had. That would have been better than the “rush” that spiked my heart rate and bp up to emergency room levels and left me on the bathroom floor in a puddle of cold sweat when I wasn’t trying to stay balanced on the toilet, sh*tting my guts out with the room spinning and everything going black. That was after one bottle (”2 servings”) from the mini-mart.

It’s not a matter of being in shape, either: I’m an active cyclist and mountaineer, and have done many double century rides and high-altitude climbs.

Even if you have a death wish, this is not the way you want to go.

i have a family member who has been drinking redlines for a while now and seems to be addicted to them. what can we do do to help them. it is not a good thing.

Great for Sex! Thanks Red-Line, I’m always up on top of things now!

c love November 25th, 2007 6:03 pm

I have tried everything under the sun for clean energy without the effects of jitters and anxiety. Even taking xanax and ssri’s. the energy pills/drinks still give me problems.some days my body can tolerate the effects and somedays it cant. In my years of exp. I can say that the best thing to do is listen to your body. I just tried redline a full bottle and i dont feel that bad on it. where when i take ephedrine i feel like im going to die from anxiety. I tried speed stack and felt like i was also going to die, and it contains synephrine(which is weak compared to ephedra). a lot of it is mental more than physical, if you think it is going to make you screwed up it will. keep your mind off the way you feel the whole time. I read a lot of the posts and it sounds like a lot of people are having panic attacks, the blackouts the, vomiting, feeling like your going to passout. its all a panic state of mind. If you have had bad exp. on everything I can tell you one thing to do and it will make you feel great. Get the diet green tea from arizona co. and eat some dark chocolate, but continue to drink the tea a lot of it. where you piss clear, i can say that this combo if you are caffine sensitive will give you clean energy. But the junkie i am i always want somthing better :) .

c love November 25th, 2007 6:23 pm

and P.S. if you are having the panic and anxiety problems from taking the drinks and pills, In my personal exp. Drink a 6 pack of brew it will kill the crappy feeling, then throw your pills out the next day :)

Jake November 27th, 2007 6:34 pm

during the police academy we ALL drank these…about 35 of the 50 people in my class drank these daily and one guy felt a litle sick the first time but he had not eaten all day…i dont see the big deal…people must be exaggerating

ileene November 28th, 2007 9:12 pm

I drank redline for the first time today… I read the label and felt nervous about taking my first sip. I was really in need of a boost, so I decided to just drink a little…
I did not feel any different. So I drank a little more…
still nothing…

I ended up drinking the entire bottle, and didn’t feel any extra surge of energy, no shivering, a little sweating because I was playing bball, but overall it did nothing special for me.
I consume a lot of coffee throughout the day so I guess my body is adjusted to the caffeine. I don’t know, but I wasn’t impressed with it.

Matt December 15th, 2007 1:11 pm

First of all, I know this post was about Redline Concentrate, not Redline Ready-to-Drink, but I’ll share my Redline RTD experience anyways since they’re similar products.

I was with my friend, who has been drinking Monster for about 3 years, and he decided to try this. He has a very high caffeine tolerance, so despite my telling him not to, he figured he’d be OK with drinking 3/4 of the bottle instead of half.

He was wrong. He at first described it as having a normal energy drink “buzz,” but within 20 minutes of taking his last sip, he started shivering a little. Then a little more. By the time I’d dialed 911, explained the situation, and asked for an amubulance to his address, he was having full-out convulsions, shaking uncontrollably on the floor.

I tried to get a glass of water into him to dilute it, which is what I’ve long been told to do when a toxin is ingested, and despite his spasms I still got a few good gulps of it down his throat. It made no difference.

Paramedics and police arrived within about ten minutes. They got him into an ambulance, and restrained him, since he was still shaking violently.

He died on his way to the hospital. That vile shit actually spiked his blood pressure up so high that the wall of his aortic artery (aorta) ruptured in multiple places, causing such a massive amount of internal bleeding that they estimate he died within seconds of the initial rupture.

People aren’t kidding around that this stuff is dangerous. Not merely because of caffeine content; there’s other substances in the mix that can seriously harm (or kill, as shown) the most caffeine-tolerant of drinkers. I’ve done my research. A normal dose of Redline is indeed comparable to a small dose of narcotics. Your caffeine tolerance or how fit you are has nothing to do with it. My friend was 5′11″ and strong as an ox. It didn’t save him.

I recommend not buying this. Avoid it at all costs. If you absolutely insist on supporting the people that make this, then follow the warning label’s advice TO THE LETTER.

AWESOME

anna December 19th, 2007 7:42 am

this is TOTALLY overhyped. i’ve been drinking full bottles of redline for 2years?? and i’m 115lbs and there have been days where i felt ZERO effect

MOSES THE BD December 21st, 2007 4:17 pm

Honestly, these posts almost scared me out of trying redline…It seems some of these people commenting have an agenda or just want attention. True, its not one of the run of the mill red bull clones it has a kick… but i feel no more energized than i do with a fixx (which mainly consists of sweet lady caffine 500mg of the harlet to be precise)It helped my workout slightly but not enough for me to take it regularly…as a strange side-effect it caused me to sweat profusely out of my palms and feet while working out… go figure… and right now my muscles are shakeing a little bit more than usual post workout shakeing.. all and all i feel good.To determine factors contributeing to tolerance im 6′0.. 160 pounds..16 y.o… should have hit me like a bag of bricks ? …I wish..

I had 2 redlines in one hour, and I felt fine later on that day and the next. The energy burst I had was insaine! I loved it. I have had it a couple times since. Redline is amazing, and It helped get me off my butt and moving! I would recomend it, but only to those who I feel can handle the energy.

evan January 3rd, 2008 10:31 pm

dam!!! it was crazy im 16 and im a snowboarder so every day i wake up at 6 and board till 8 at night i drink 1 to 2 monsters a day and when i get home i go stright to sleep but today i had a redline and when i got home i painted for 1 hr stright

me. January 4th, 2008 2:23 pm

thats so retarded.
it will not kill you.
i had two in one day.
its strong, yeah, but not THAT strong

josh January 4th, 2008 7:31 pm

Some people are just more sensitive to caffeine than others, just because YOU drank two in a day doesn’t mean that everyone can or should. If it says to dilute it or not drink it all at once then the average person shouldn’t.
