Quite Possibly the Most Powerful Energy Drink Ever

Seriously, the drink may mean the end of this blog. In the “before time,” conversations generally went a little something like this:

So, what’s a good energy drink in terms of strength?
Well there’s a lot to choose from, based on caffeine content, taurine, ginseng, green tea extracts…
Well… what if I’m just interested in caffeine content?
Well just go to The Caffeine Database and look around!

The point, probably lost, is that there’s a lot of drinks, in varying sizes and caffeine contents, that also contain a lot of other things.

So then this new thing came out. It’s called VPX Redline Fat Burner. Amazon is lacking a little information, so here’s a little more:

Check out this freaky scientific VPX breakthrough: RED LINEĀ®: is the only matrix ever developed to shred fat through the shivering response in the body. By shivering the body burns huge amounts of stored bodyfat for energy in an effort to keep the body warm. That’s not all! In addition to shivering, you’ll also be sweating up a thermogenic storm. The combined mechanisms of these two processes results in unparalleled fat loss!

What fun. Now, it’s pretty obvious looking at the ingredients that there’s caffeine. But get this: all of the aforementioned goodness, and the serving size is FOUR ml. About one TENTH of an ounce. The whole bottle has 240 ml, or 60 servings. Basically, a bottle of this, less than the size of a normal can of coke, WILL kill you. This is nothing to be playing around with.

I have friends. Not just normal friends, mind you. The kind of friends that voluntarily live on the streets. The kind of friends who, when drinking, race to forgetting. The kind of friends who take caffeine pills, ephedrine pills, and asprin.. all at once. One, in particular, drinks and consumes over a gram of caffeine daily, to stave off the headaches. So you know this is a serious review:

oh yeah, it’s definately 90% caffeine. the aftertaste is unmistakeable. the best part is that since i didn’t have my normal “dose” this morning, i probably won’t actually feel sh*t.

[10 minutes later]

the caffeine kicked in a lot faster than i expected. though in retrospect, it normally does when it’s in syrup form and tastes like ass.

feel oddly cold too. took me a minute to realize that while i still was warm, it was that ’shiver’ reflex kicking in. it’s a lot like when
you get a chill at the back of your neck, but somewhat continuous.

So what’s in this magical bottle of awesome? Caffeine, Green Tea, Yerba Mate, 5-HTP (5 hydroxy-1-tryptophan), cAMP, Yohimbe, Evodiamine, and Vinpocetine. And a few other things.

I know, I know, so here’s some more info:

cAMP is cyclic adenosine monophosphate. It supposedly “sparks many intercellular processes.” Whatever that means. Increased concentrations supposedly raise thyroid horomone levels, and help fat burning (would help explain why it’s in a fat-burning supplement).

Yohimbe is a bark extract from a tree in Africa. It’s considered a natural aphrodisiac, and sold here to treat imotency, dialate pupils, and stimulate fat loss. It can also mess with your blood pressure, so watch out.

Evodiamine is derived from some Chinese fruit called Evodia Rutaecarpa. Supposedly burns fat.

Vinpocetine is an alkaloid derived from some periwinkle plant. It is used in Europe, Japan, and Mexico to treat crebrovascular and cognitive disorders. Some people claims it elevates metabolism, but with no proof.

And the interesting one in the group: 5-HTP. I made sure to spell it out, so the smart ones in the group have already figured out the key: Tryptophan. It’s the same stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy, and there’s scientific evidence of it. The 5-HTP compound is sometimes used to treat mild depression since, somehow, it can increase serotonin levels. It can also affect appetite, which may be part of why they put it in here. The other part? When you’re jacking up a drink with this much caffeine, you’re going to get jitters and “scatterbrain.” This may actually cut the disconnected thoughts out and allow you to think normally, but still give you the energy effects of caffeine. Awesome.

Apparently you can buy this stuff at places like Super Supplements, GNC, and even some 7-11s. The concentrate isn’t something you should take a guzzle of. Or even a large sip. If you search on the internet, you can see some people who took the recommended dose, and started blacking out towards the end of a workout. Blacking out. 4 mililiters. Damn. There’s also a ready-to-drink version (I would bet that’s the one at 7-11), and half a bottle is all that’s recommended. Pay attention to it. People are comparing the 1/2 bottle to a full hit of ephedra. Unless you’ve done that before and know the effect it has on your body, don’t go doing anything macho with this one. Go do that with redbull.

Just for poignant measure, look at this review:

I recently purchased the liquid form of redline at a local 7 Eleven store.

It was the first time I have ever drank an energy drink that had such an affect. With in a few minutes , I started to sweat and shake. Being familiar with the effects of narcotics, I must say the feeling felt a lot like cocaine feels.

The most disturbing trait is that my penis shriveled up like I just got out of the icy cold ocean. I can’t help but think that this product will be taken off the market. The effects are too strong for some minors and may not be safe for people on certain medication which are yet to be known.

And this one:

I tried Redline today while heading to work. I am a huge fan of RedBull & Diet Rockstar. I am 33 years old & in excellent condition.

Having not read the warning label I drank the whole bottle within 5 minutes. Within 10 minutes I was blacking out behind the wheel & shaking uncontrollably. I pulled over at a gas station — I was having difficulty in swallowing and could not stand, breathe or see straight.

I could not even walk for the convulsions. A bystander called the paramedics. Needless to say – my blood pressure was sky high & I thought I was on my way out.

I feel this drink is extremely dangerous & should not be on the market. There needs to be a very visible warning label not to drink the whole bottle for beginners. It has been 5 hours now & I still do not feel normal.

This drink could seriously kill someone if not informed.
I am sorry but I will never drink this again nor recommend it to fellow peers.

I keep reading messages of guys saying they’ve done hard drugs and this was the worst trip they ever had. Or that they’re athletes, with well-trained bodies, but even Redline was too much for them.

Seriously?

Well, I’m a twenty year old woman, 135 lbs, moderately active no-smoker. The first time I took Redline, I was eighteen and at around 125 lbs. I have never taken drugs before, and I can’t equate Redline to giving me a heart-thumping buzz. I was really active, but it certainly didn’t make me hallucinate. And it’s not cause I have a high tolerance – while I like coffee and Coca-Cola, I’m not a caffeine pro.

I’ve been drinking Redline, off and on, for about three years now. I don’t suggest that someone down multiple cans in a row, or even drink it very often. Too much caffeine is hell on the central nervous system, and the cardiovascular system. But to say it’s on the level with cocaine or crystal meth, is such a stretch, IMO.

I have a high caffeine tolerance, and a bottle of this stuff(RTD, not the concentrate) was almost enough to give me the shakes. Probably equivalent to 2-3 monster drinks. The big ones. But it’s a bit expensive — I’ll just go with coffee.

Interesting…

Personally i think this is one of the best tasting energy drinks i had in a long time. It didn’t give me as much as a burst as Cocaine did the first time i tried it but it is probably because i’ve built up a tolerance. Im gonna have one before school tomorrow. Finals baby!

Brianne January 26th, 2008 11:03 pm

yeah i tried this stuff and holy mother of mary. i was shaking and shivering like i was cold, but everyone else was fine. i was told by someone later thats it pretty much liquid cocaine. it was awesome though, the head buzz. i love this drink!!

Nick January 29th, 2008 4:14 pm

I tried this stuff three months ago. I was shaking by the end of the bottle, and just sorta blacked out. I woke up in a bathtub full of ice. A message on the mirror informed me that my kidneys had been removed and I should call 911. Apparently VPX is testing their supplements on cyborgs that are pieced together with real humans parts. Redline is really dangerous stuff, and from now on I will stick to Weider supplements only, cuz good ole ben and joe would never steal my organs.

One of my friends gave me a can of redline energry yesterday. It landed me in the emergency 11 hours later. We had to call 911 after I felt like my heart was going to explode. I do not recommened anyone drink this energry drink. It was not enjoyable to drink this.

A brief history:

I competed heavily in weightlifting and powerlifting all through high school. I took a number of energy supplements, primarily Hydroxycut (back when it had ephedrine). After getting injure in the military (which I entered @ the tender age of 17), I was unable to exercise more than 5-10 minutes at a time. Now, four years later, I’ve resumed working out, and decided to try an energy drink.

I bought a 4-pack at our local walmart. It set off the check-id warning at the cashier’s desk, but they didn’t check my I.D. I look older than i am, and rarely even get carded for alcohol (which I am of legal age to drink).

I drank about 1/2 a bottle before getting in the car to go to the gym. It tasted.. about like every other energy drink- not very good. I stuck it in my gym back, and went on. I didn’t feel much, so i drank the rest when I got there. I didn’t see much of a difference until about 15 minutes into the elliptical. My heart started racing a bit more than usual, and I perspired a little extra. I got some sharp pains in my chest for a minute or two, but then it settled down. 10 minutes later, my pulse went back to normal (well, what’s considered normal for doing 165 steps/min for 35 minutes). I felt as if I had just taken a really relaxing nap, and woke up ready to take on the world. I worked out for about an hour and a half longer, then went home. After I got home, I jogged around the neighborhood (still was full of energy), and did an extended stretch.

I didn’t get to bed until around 4am (which is actually typical for me), and then woke up at 9am for work. No hangover, just a little dry in the mouth.

Today was day 3 of being ‘on the drink’, and I have only been feeling better. Now there is no excessive peak, just steady energy all the way through. Coming off of it is probably the smoothest I’ve ever felt. There is no crash&burn effect- you simply relax. When I was on an ephedrine regimen, I would usually feel rather tired after it wore off. Then again, I worked out for 4 hours a day, 5-6 days a week.

As far as size and tolerance- I am not typical. I weigh ~250 (in the off-season), am over 6 foot tall, and have 18.5 inch biceps and wear size 36 pants. I also used to take large amounts of ephedrine (3-6 hydroxicut capsules per day). After I got off of ephedrine, any moderate amounts of caffeine simply made me sleepy and sluggish. It affects me a little bit more now, but I am still very tolerant.

I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone that is on any type of limiting diet (low-carb, protein-stacking, etc), that is under the age of 21 (driving while drinking this may cause you to get pulled over for a sobriety test, and it’s never pretty for minors), or have less than 5%-8% body fat (low amounts of body fat cause the body to absorb a deficient amount of fat-soluble vitamins/minerals, causing serious adverse affects when taking strong supplements).

As with everything else, be careful and know what you are ingesting. Just because it has been referred to as “liquid cocaine” doesn’t mean it’s cool to drink it. Don’t depend solely on this or any other ’supplement’ or ‘weight loss solution’ to get you in shape. Exercise, eat healthy, and have excessive amounts of intercourse (only if you and your partner are over the age of 18, are both fully consenting, and don’t use high-fat syrups and foods as a form of foreplay).

chris February 13th, 2008 5:26 pm

i saw a guy in a skate video drink one (fully flared bradon biebiel, search it on youtube) anyways i ate a meal drank a whole one and felt fine, so i really dont know what your taling about

Thanatos February 20th, 2008 11:12 am

Everbody is diffrent. Some days for me it is like drinking water and other days my blood pressure is through the roof and i get a headache for hours. other days I just get hyper and bounce off the walls. The Yohimbe can affect your bnlood pressure so be careful if you have high BP.

ryan February 20th, 2008 9:46 pm

well iv read this whole link and i think this drink sounds a lil dangerous but allt he poeple who have gotten int he hospital cuz of this has drank the whole bottle in like 10 mins(of course its pretty easy when you dont know what it is and its a tiny bottle) but i only usually drink full throttle and rockstar( i am only 14 but i drink atleast 2-3 cans a day)and i was wondering ware they sellt his stuff, just in the usa?

Jennifer February 26th, 2008 5:25 pm

I completely disagree (at least re: the ready to drink version), but maybe it affects everyone differently.

I picked up a bottle of the ready to drink (mixed berry) version at Vitamin Shoppe on a whim. I normally don’t even drink coffee, a cup of green tea a few times a week has been the extent of my caffeine intake, but I thought the fat-burning claims were interesting, and if it enables me to eat an extra donut/day, I’m in. I’m 5′2 and weigh 107lbs. I ate a light breakfast and drank half the bottle over the course of maybe half an hour. I just felt really good: very positive energy, no jitters or shakes or sweats or heart-racing, normal level of focus but feeling really upbeat and able to climb a mountain. So about two hours later I downed the other half of the bottle. Still just felt really happy and well energized. I’ve been drinking about one every other day or so since then (a few months ago), and I’ve yet to have any negative effects or any sign of a crash, even after spending up to a week “off the sauce.”

I am a little skeptical of some of the ingredients (it seems like a drug, really) but after being pretty cautious for the first month or so and testing going without it, I don’t think it’s addictive or has any lasting mood effects. Long term effects, of course, are still unclear. But hey, that’s true of a lot of things I do. ;)

Fahtima February 26th, 2008 8:21 pm

I was bored one day and I had one in my fridge so I drank some. Pretty nasty but not as bad as the carbonated stuff. well the bottle said to drink only half of it a day but I was like what could it really do. So I drank the whole bottle. I did get the chills but I felt so energized it was crazy. I was cleaning the stock room at work. It took me a couple of hours and by the end of it I was burning up and sweating. It actually felt kinda good. I got home and went for a run but I went to bed around 12am no problem like normal. My mom’s family has a history of heart problems so they can’t really take this stuff but it doesn’t affect me. And get this I was only like 17 when I drank this stuff.

Lindsey February 28th, 2008 1:58 pm

Hmm, I drink these atleast 2 a week, and have no idea what your talking about. I dont drink nor take anyother caffeine, and I love this stuff. Ya’ll are crazy.

Michael March 4th, 2008 6:30 pm

You guys are all pussys, if ur all getting heart attacks from it, then you seriously need to get off your ass and get some excercise to strengthen your heart. I drank redline everyday before wrestling practice and it gave me the extra adreniline to pound my opponents into the mat. It even allowed me to keep up with people that were bigger and stronger than i was.

ryan March 9th, 2008 10:37 pm

“Do not drink use this product if you are more than 15 lbs over weight” Right on the label, people.

joe shamo March 13th, 2008 8:19 pm

you guys are trippin nigga it dont mess you up that bad you pussys

Lady Cameltoe March 16th, 2008 11:19 am

Dear dudes on Redline,

This sh*t is awesome. Not only will it help you with your erectile dysfunction, it will also give you enough energy for round 2.

We all took 3/4 of a bottle and we were GOOD. We were in intergalactic mode, battling all sorts of aliens at work. Ok, granted that sounded a little whack, we were very happy.

We experienced some shivering momentarily, but it was quickly resolved with some fantastic bursts of energy that resulted in maximum efficiency at the workplace.

So to all of you pussies out there that can’t read the directions, you can all have two more bottles and write to us from the grave.

Good day old chaps!

Signed,
Cameltoe face

Hello March 22nd, 2008 11:16 am

This stupid thing almost K.O.ed me to the emergency room.

Krystal March 26th, 2008 1:35 am

Pretty much the most amazing drink ever.
People these days just need something to complain about….or something to blame. Most of you were probably 40 pounds overweight and were already headed to the ER. The Redline just helped you get there faster. Read the label. Not in a mean way…but really.
