Quite Possibly the Most Powerful Energy Drink Ever

Seriously, the drink may mean the end of this blog. In the “before time,” conversations generally went a little something like this:

So, what’s a good energy drink in terms of strength?
Well there’s a lot to choose from, based on caffeine content, taurine, ginseng, green tea extracts…
Well… what if I’m just interested in caffeine content?
Well just go to The Caffeine Database and look around!

The point, probably lost, is that there’s a lot of drinks, in varying sizes and caffeine contents, that also contain a lot of other things.

So then this new thing came out. It’s called VPX Redline Fat Burner. Amazon is lacking a little information, so here’s a little more:

Check out this freaky scientific VPX breakthrough: RED LINE®: is the only matrix ever developed to shred fat through the shivering response in the body. By shivering the body burns huge amounts of stored bodyfat for energy in an effort to keep the body warm. That’s not all! In addition to shivering, you’ll also be sweating up a thermogenic storm. The combined mechanisms of these two processes results in unparalleled fat loss!

What fun. Now, it’s pretty obvious looking at the ingredients that there’s caffeine. But get this: all of the aforementioned goodness, and the serving size is FOUR ml. About one TENTH of an ounce. The whole bottle has 240 ml, or 60 servings. Basically, a bottle of this, less than the size of a normal can of coke, WILL kill you. This is nothing to be playing around with.

I have friends. Not just normal friends, mind you. The kind of friends that voluntarily live on the streets. The kind of friends who, when drinking, race to forgetting. The kind of friends who take caffeine pills, ephedrine pills, and asprin.. all at once. One, in particular, drinks and consumes over a gram of caffeine daily, to stave off the headaches. So you know this is a serious review:

oh yeah, it’s definately 90% caffeine. the aftertaste is unmistakeable. the best part is that since i didn’t have my normal “dose” this morning, i probably won’t actually feel sh*t.

[10 minutes later]

the caffeine kicked in a lot faster than i expected. though in retrospect, it normally does when it’s in syrup form and tastes like ass.

feel oddly cold too. took me a minute to realize that while i still was warm, it was that ’shiver’ reflex kicking in. it’s a lot like when
you get a chill at the back of your neck, but somewhat continuous.

So what’s in this magical bottle of awesome? Caffeine, Green Tea, Yerba Mate, 5-HTP (5 hydroxy-1-tryptophan), cAMP, Yohimbe, Evodiamine, and Vinpocetine. And a few other things.

I know, I know, so here’s some more info:

cAMP is cyclic adenosine monophosphate. It supposedly “sparks many intercellular processes.” Whatever that means. Increased concentrations supposedly raise thyroid horomone levels, and help fat burning (would help explain why it’s in a fat-burning supplement).

Yohimbe is a bark extract from a tree in Africa. It’s considered a natural aphrodisiac, and sold here to treat imotency, dialate pupils, and stimulate fat loss. It can also mess with your blood pressure, so watch out.

Evodiamine is derived from some Chinese fruit called Evodia Rutaecarpa. Supposedly burns fat.

Vinpocetine is an alkaloid derived from some periwinkle plant. It is used in Europe, Japan, and Mexico to treat crebrovascular and cognitive disorders. Some people claims it elevates metabolism, but with no proof.

And the interesting one in the group: 5-HTP. I made sure to spell it out, so the smart ones in the group have already figured out the key: Tryptophan. It’s the same stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy, and there’s scientific evidence of it. The 5-HTP compound is sometimes used to treat mild depression since, somehow, it can increase serotonin levels. It can also affect appetite, which may be part of why they put it in here. The other part? When you’re jacking up a drink with this much caffeine, you’re going to get jitters and “scatterbrain.” This may actually cut the disconnected thoughts out and allow you to think normally, but still give you the energy effects of caffeine. Awesome.

Apparently you can buy this stuff at places like Super Supplements, GNC, and even some 7-11s. The concentrate isn’t something you should take a guzzle of. Or even a large sip. If you search on the internet, you can see some people who took the recommended dose, and started blacking out towards the end of a workout. Blacking out. 4 mililiters. Damn. There’s also a ready-to-drink version (I would bet that’s the one at 7-11), and half a bottle is all that’s recommended. Pay attention to it. People are comparing the 1/2 bottle to a full hit of ephedra. Unless you’ve done that before and know the effect it has on your body, don’t go doing anything macho with this one. Go do that with redbull.

Just for poignant measure, look at this review:

I recently purchased the liquid form of redline at a local 7 Eleven store.

It was the first time I have ever drank an energy drink that had such an affect. With in a few minutes , I started to sweat and shake. Being familiar with the effects of narcotics, I must say the feeling felt a lot like cocaine feels.

The most disturbing trait is that my penis shriveled up like I just got out of the icy cold ocean. I can’t help but think that this product will be taken off the market. The effects are too strong for some minors and may not be safe for people on certain medication which are yet to be known.

And this one:

I tried Redline today while heading to work. I am a huge fan of RedBull & Diet Rockstar. I am 33 years old & in excellent condition.

Having not read the warning label I drank the whole bottle within 5 minutes. Within 10 minutes I was blacking out behind the wheel & shaking uncontrollably. I pulled over at a gas station — I was having difficulty in swallowing and could not stand, breathe or see straight.

I could not even walk for the convulsions. A bystander called the paramedics. Needless to say - my blood pressure was sky high & I thought I was on my way out.

I feel this drink is extremely dangerous & should not be on the market. There needs to be a very visible warning label not to drink the whole bottle for beginners. It has been 5 hours now & I still do not feel normal.

This drink could seriously kill someone if not informed.
I am sorry but I will never drink this again nor recommend it to fellow peers.

Ive been drinking redlines pretty frequently over the past months. I only get it for the energy, not the taste. I usually only drink a bottle a day. I usually get pretty wired and alert. One time I woke up late for an architecture studio class and I downed a monster and a redline to wake up fast, and when i got to class we were doing a freehand midterm. MY whole body was shaking and couldnt control my hands at all. It sucked but I got a decent grade on the drawing. Well my point is take energy drinks and especially redlines slow and build up some before drinking regularely.

oh ya, dont drink redlines on an empty stomach, it sucks

Toxicidy in a can. The main ingredient in this stuff is ‘Anhydrous Caffeine’, also known as ‘Theophylline.’ Theophylline is indicated for the treatment of symptoms and reversible air flow obstruction associated with chronic asthma, emphysema, and chronic asthma!
I have asthma, and I used to take only 1/2 of a tablet which was equal to half of what was actually prescribed for me. My older sister knew that when I took this medicine I would always get all shakey. So I guess she thought oooh what fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I found out from her later on that she was admitted to the hospital later that day, they thought she was a speed or cocaine overdose. When they learned that she had taken Theophylline it was actually more severe because of the dangerous toxic interaction with many drugs. Not a good product. Do Not Use…..

maybe a little more energetic than before
but thats about it

i dont drink a lot of energy drinks, or coffee

So yeah. I dont see people having convulsions and going to the emergency room over this stuff

Alien Fetus June 6th, 2008 11:11 am

I drank a bottle of it on a full stomach and, other than a quick little bout of the jitters, nothing much happened. Still, after reading the reviews, it’ll be my last bottle.

uhm June 13th, 2008 10:07 am

I bought a case of this stuff, works great. I never experienced shakes….or any of the crap people are describing on this site. never went to the hospital. i used to drink one a day..never had a problem. didnt get a buzz, just took away any and all fatigue i had. didnt get sick..

i’m a typical female couch potato….what are you people drinking? can’t be the same stuff.

lunch box June 14th, 2008 12:39 am

damn i’m only fifteen i drank one to day at nine am i didn’t think it would hurt to chug a red line that was the last time i chug and run i was about half way done then boom my ass was flying a cop stopped me and made me do a test to see if i was on drugs my legs are burning from the distance i ran

This stuff is amazing. The first time I had it nothing happened, but about a year later I had it again and drank almost two bottles in a night and all it did was give me energy. I wasn’t shaky but I was running around and SO HYPER. Normally energy drinks don’t do anything to me, but this stuff works!! It felt more like an adrenaline rush than anything else. I didn’t think I was going to die. It has a weird aftertaste though, that’s the only part I didn’t like.

This is NOT a Red Bull!!! July 9th, 2008 4:31 pm

If you drink two servings of this on an empty stomach when you wake up in the morning, OF COURSE you’re going to be jittery. And if you’re sensitive to caffeine, you’re probably going to the emergency room. This is not a freaking Red Bull, people. This is a hard core weight loss product. Drink HALF of the bottle on a full stomach, then go to the gym an hour later and burn off all of that energy. If you don’t plan on doing some major physical activity, don’t bother drinking it. You’ll be cracked out of your mind and unable to function for the rest of the day.

First of all…you aren’t supposed to be drinking more than half of this drink! It’s not smart to just drink or eat things without reading the label first!

I have been drinking Redline for a year now and it is the BEST legal pick-me-up! I am guaranteed to feel energetic and in a better mood after drinking it! Not to mention the appetite suppressant which works well also. (I only drank it for the energy.)

However, I STRONGLY suggest that you don’t start! DO NOT DO IT. Because of my regular use of this drink…I now have a serious sleeping problem…I take sleeping pills to fall asleep and I need Redline to make me wake up.

The drink alter chemicals in your brain. You must consider this if you are already on some type of anxiety medicine and esp. Thyroid Meds!

I have come to realize myself, (even tho I LOVE this drink SO much!), that it needs to be taken off the market! The packaging is misleading and the harmful effects are somewhat downplayed..

Be Careful!!!

i just bought a 4 pack today at gnc made a special trip 30 min away just to try it. it totally dissapointhed me alot. i drank half as directed, and didnt feel a damn thing and i was being very active.i was looking forward to it alot and was totally let down, ending up drinking the whole bottle in the course of a couple hrs, still notta. taking a whole one tommorow, well see im not holding my breath. this has to have better effects on someone with minimal caffiene intake or tolerance, ive done meth and coke and it does not by no means compare as others said it did before my purchase. i kinda hated i wasted my money, shits exensive, oh well. the lady at gnc warned me to only take half and i left thinking this must be some hardcore shit…….not at all..anyone else get this reaction and as dissapointed as me??

Clark July 15th, 2008 8:10 am

There is a very visible label that says don’t drink the whole thing, it’s in huge letters on the cap and decent sized letters on the label. I love redline. The very first time I tried it, I drank a whole bottle (and yes I saw the warning), and I felt great in my workout. I sweated more, but did not have your so called “shivers” also, I’m surprised you would talk about the 60 serving one before the RTD. I’ve never seen the 60 serving in actual real life, I’ve just read about it. I really like redline, and it does seem to help me loose more fat for the summer when working out. Don’t get a good product taken off the market.

Kenny7822 July 24th, 2008 8:35 am

I’ve been drinking Redline for the last couple days. It gives me a good amount of energy, more than any other energy drink I have tried. I can see how it can be dangerous though and you should definetly read the entire bottle and follow the directions before consuming it. I’m a male, 5′6 and 120 pounds and I drank a whole bottle and I was fine. I do have a large tolerance for caffeine though (I take about 500mg of caffeine per day) and if I drank more than one can I definetly would have OD’d. Also, I know you have to be 18 to buy this but I wouldn’t recomend this to anyone under 21 (I’m 22 myself). If you follow the directions and you are of proper age then this is a great product. If not then I could see how you could have problems.

Munkee July 28th, 2008 12:19 am

I usually drink 3 monsters a day or so and today I was at my shop all alone so I decided to run accross the street to the 7-11 and grab me a redline and 64 oz gatorade double gulp and a hot pocket. My job is preeetttyy demanding, 106˚ and up temperatures with no fans/AC (state law)…bitchy customers, hot cars. I basically ate the hot pocket, chugged the redline and frequently sipped my gatorade and i was able to do the work of three other technicians and keep my cool with certain peoples. All it did was get me a bit sweatier than usual as it usually is hot but i noticed this time the sweat was dripping everywhere. I’m assuming most people should really look into the s#!t they buy before consuming, warnings are there for a reason.

Matt August 4th, 2008 10:07 am

I bought a Redline the other day, because I had heard so much about it being really intense. I was kind of afraid to drink it, but I had just got back from Quakecon, a gaming conference that last three straight days, and obvious didn’t get a lot of sleep and I wanted to be alert in church Sunday morning. So right before church started I downed the entire bottle in 2 seconds. Yeah, I read the label and just decided that I would be willing to deal with the consequences if they were bad. Anyway I didn’t really notice anything. I had been drinking Bawls the entire time at Quakecon and basically nothing else so the only real effect I got from all of that combined was shortness of breath when I was riding my bike later on in the evening. I’m not really sure what all of the commotion about this drink is. A friend of mine said she drank one once and had to go to the emergency room, but then again she also told me she had taken a single Vicodin once and went loopy. A single Vicodin isn’t noticeable to me. I’m interested in trying the liquid capsule Redlines sometime though. Maybe they are effective.

[...] It’s true.  As I’ve said I’m a caffeine fiend.  I’m not chugging down Redline or anything, but my average daily intake is several times the national average.  So when my body [...]

Ok guys I have a caffeine tolerence that is through the roof. I a sitting i can consume over 4000 mg of caffeine and still not feel anything. I’ve tried both the most powerful drinks and caffeing pills that i can find. If anyone out there has a tolerence like me and can find a good drink that could give me a buzz let me know please. email at coopsnook@gmail.com

Vman August 28th, 2008 1:58 pm

After looking at this website to see what had the most caffeine, I went to the gas station and bought a Redline yesterday to try it out. I know I have a high tolerance to caffeine, I think I probably need around (no less than) 300mg of it to really start to feel any buzz - I’m basing that off a Grande Americano from Starbucks which has 225mg, and then I get 3 add shots of espresso. That’s perfect for me. I’m energized and feel great. I’ve always wondered how much caffeine is in a shot of espresso… Does anyone know???

I drank half the can at first, waited about 30 minutes…didn’t feel much. Drank the other half, and another 30 minutes later, basically I noticed I felt good. I was at work and my job involves a lot of running around, and the drink did help me out because I was feeling tired that day before I drank it.

No negative side effects on me. It seems that drinking Redline just depends on the person. I could see how drinking one of these before working out would definitely improve my energy, and I’ll probably do it sometime.
I’d say I could drink about 1 & 1/2 of these and be perfect for the energy buzz I like to get from coffee.

I’d like to try the Redline Power Rush 7 hour energy. I’m going to look for it at my local gas station next time I’m at work. It says here that one has 350mg of caffeine…should be just right for me!

Vman August 28th, 2008 2:07 pm

Okay so I just noticed that this site does say how much caffeine is in espresso - its 77mg shot (1.5oz)
WOW. I didn’t realize how much I was getting when I ordered my Grande Americano with 3 shots.
The Americano has 225mg + 3 shots 231mg = 456mg!!!

Jeez! I guess I could drink 2 Redline RTD’s.

E-O September 21st, 2008 3:06 pm

I’ve been drinking energy drinks quite regularly for the past 9 months or so, but I’ve just recently come across this product. I like to take caffeine before workouts to help with muscle soreness and to get that extra boost, but WOW. Redline is intense and keeps me going for hours. I agree that this product should be used with caution, hence the reason for the warning label, but I don’t think it should be taken off the market.

Josh is dissapointed September 26th, 2008 10:13 am

So I’ve drank the entire bottle and I feel nothing. This was a great dissapointment to what I thought was going to be a wonderful buzz.

margie September 29th, 2008 9:44 am

Redline is the best for us caffiene addicts who need a LOT of caffiene for the right effect.
However, one night I drank 2 redlines very quickly and had an anxiety attack. Didn’t need medical attention and I am obviously okay. I think if you are going to drink it than just take it slow.
Another thing- I noticed these comments are from 3 years ago… well now you have to be 18 to buy redline and they do not sell them at many places (I found redline at GNC). Also they have atleast 8 different warnings on them.

margie September 29th, 2008 9:46 am

ps- i was referring to the comments on the first page from 2005, i haven’t read the newer ones yet so my apologies

ken October 14th, 2008 6:38 pm

i use redline everyday.i drink 1/2 bottles at a time. i love it, i hope it stays on the market forever. if a perosn will simply read? one will see the manufacturer recommends 1/2 bottle the first time!!! like many many many other products, if a person is responsible enough to follow directions and not abuse the product it will work for the majority of the population! i have nothing but good things to say about this product!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kyle November 3rd, 2008 1:59 pm

I’m seeing a lot of exaggerated responses to this stuff. “Don’t drink it! It could really kill you!” Geez… Just calm down. If you’re hypersensitive to caffeine, then you have to be as dumb as sh** to try this stuff in the first place. But if your body can handle caffeine properly like a normal body should, then you’ll be fine if you drink a bottle of this stuff. It gives a nice boost of energy…sometimes. Sometimes, it gives you an upset stomach, so make sure you’ve got some food in your belly.

jennifer November 5th, 2008 7:20 am

it all depends on your tolerance for this type of stuff. all i know is i’ve been up all night vomitting and freezing ass cold! i drank this drink yesterday at 1:30pm. i still feel like i’m talking 100 mph and high as a kite. i’m such a lightweight. typically energy drinks don’t do anything for me at all. i think i’m done with this crap, it shouldn’t even be on the market. seriously. i don’t need to go to the hospital or anything, but good god, when does this shit wear off?

Pat November 23rd, 2008 11:20 am

So… What you’re telling me is that I shouldn’t have drank a whole Redline RTD with a Monster chaser? Hm…

Jeremiah Dyke December 7th, 2008 2:49 pm

Redline: 21st century crack

The mere fact that I am writing this review is a testament to how much energy I have. My typical caffeine intake consists of 2 cups coffee– I only drink energy drinks on occasion– but nothing compares to this drink. Hearing all the hype I used precaution by only drinking 4 ounces, avoiding an empty stomach, etc, yet the jittery feeling stays with you for a multitude of hours after you drink it. Even after five hours I still find myself lacking concentration, feeling uncomfortably tense and erratically shaking/tapping my leg and fingers as if I’m about to give a presentation. There is absolutely no way this will stay on the market for very long, so if you’re into this kind of thing I would begin stocking up on your supply. All-and-all it’s not a bad tasting drink nor is the affects unmanageable. It’s just weird to get this much kick from four ounces. As I said, it’s liquid crack, destined to be banned and likely to be laughed about centuries from now when they figure out the full effects of this stuff—the way we now laugh about early nineteenth century coca-cola.

I really think that the effects of this drink are highly dependent on the individual, possibly in an unpredictable way. Also, I’m not so sure the aforementioned adverse reactions solely have to do with the caffeine content.

I have a relatively high caffeine tolerance and had been drinking a minimum of 500 mg/day for a long time while studying for my board exams. I ran across Redline in a GNC and decided to give it a shot. I did read the huge, obvious warning label on it, but being a 265 lb bodybuilder with a high caffeine tolerance, I ignored the warning.

Within 5-10 minutes, I could feel my heart pounding and noticed a bit of a tremor. Then my ears started to get hot, and I got a little worried. I ran to the bathroom and looked in the mirror, and my face was beet red. My vision got a little blurry, and I had feelings of impending doom. I got pretty scared, but all of these symptoms did slowly go away over the next hour or so.

Needless to say, I will never use that drink again or recommend it to people. I really don’t understand why they include twice as much drink in a bottle than is supposedly recommended.
