Quite Possibly the Most Powerful Energy Drink Ever

Seriously, the drink may mean the end of this blog. In the “before time,” conversations generally went a little something like this:

So, what’s a good energy drink in terms of strength?
Well there’s a lot to choose from, based on caffeine content, taurine, ginseng, green tea extracts…
Well… what if I’m just interested in caffeine content?
Well just go to The Caffeine Database and look around!

The point, probably lost, is that there’s a lot of drinks, in varying sizes and caffeine contents, that also contain a lot of other things.

So then this new thing came out. It’s called VPX Redline Fat Burner. Amazon is lacking a little information, so here’s a little more:

Check out this freaky scientific VPX breakthrough: RED LINE®: is the only matrix ever developed to shred fat through the shivering response in the body. By shivering the body burns huge amounts of stored bodyfat for energy in an effort to keep the body warm. That’s not all! In addition to shivering, you’ll also be sweating up a thermogenic storm. The combined mechanisms of these two processes results in unparalleled fat loss!

What fun. Now, it’s pretty obvious looking at the ingredients that there’s caffeine. But get this: all of the aforementioned goodness, and the serving size is FOUR ml. About one TENTH of an ounce. The whole bottle has 240 ml, or 60 servings. Basically, a bottle of this, less than the size of a normal can of coke, WILL kill you. This is nothing to be playing around with.

I have friends. Not just normal friends, mind you. The kind of friends that voluntarily live on the streets. The kind of friends who, when drinking, race to forgetting. The kind of friends who take caffeine pills, ephedrine pills, and asprin.. all at once. One, in particular, drinks and consumes over a gram of caffeine daily, to stave off the headaches. So you know this is a serious review:

oh yeah, it’s definately 90% caffeine. the aftertaste is unmistakeable. the best part is that since i didn’t have my normal “dose” this morning, i probably won’t actually feel sh*t.

[10 minutes later]

the caffeine kicked in a lot faster than i expected. though in retrospect, it normally does when it’s in syrup form and tastes like ass.

feel oddly cold too. took me a minute to realize that while i still was warm, it was that ’shiver’ reflex kicking in. it’s a lot like when
you get a chill at the back of your neck, but somewhat continuous.

So what’s in this magical bottle of awesome? Caffeine, Green Tea, Yerba Mate, 5-HTP (5 hydroxy-1-tryptophan), cAMP, Yohimbe, Evodiamine, and Vinpocetine. And a few other things.

I know, I know, so here’s some more info:

cAMP is cyclic adenosine monophosphate. It supposedly “sparks many intercellular processes.” Whatever that means. Increased concentrations supposedly raise thyroid horomone levels, and help fat burning (would help explain why it’s in a fat-burning supplement).

Yohimbe is a bark extract from a tree in Africa. It’s considered a natural aphrodisiac, and sold here to treat imotency, dialate pupils, and stimulate fat loss. It can also mess with your blood pressure, so watch out.

Evodiamine is derived from some Chinese fruit called Evodia Rutaecarpa. Supposedly burns fat.

Vinpocetine is an alkaloid derived from some periwinkle plant. It is used in Europe, Japan, and Mexico to treat crebrovascular and cognitive disorders. Some people claims it elevates metabolism, but with no proof.

And the interesting one in the group: 5-HTP. I made sure to spell it out, so the smart ones in the group have already figured out the key: Tryptophan. It’s the same stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy, and there’s scientific evidence of it. The 5-HTP compound is sometimes used to treat mild depression since, somehow, it can increase serotonin levels. It can also affect appetite, which may be part of why they put it in here. The other part? When you’re jacking up a drink with this much caffeine, you’re going to get jitters and “scatterbrain.” This may actually cut the disconnected thoughts out and allow you to think normally, but still give you the energy effects of caffeine. Awesome.

Apparently you can buy this stuff at places like Super Supplements, GNC, and even some 7-11s. The concentrate isn’t something you should take a guzzle of. Or even a large sip. If you search on the internet, you can see some people who took the recommended dose, and started blacking out towards the end of a workout. Blacking out. 4 mililiters. Damn. There’s also a ready-to-drink version (I would bet that’s the one at 7-11), and half a bottle is all that’s recommended. Pay attention to it. People are comparing the 1/2 bottle to a full hit of ephedra. Unless you’ve done that before and know the effect it has on your body, don’t go doing anything macho with this one. Go do that with redbull.

Just for poignant measure, look at this review:

I recently purchased the liquid form of redline at a local 7 Eleven store.

It was the first time I have ever drank an energy drink that had such an affect. With in a few minutes , I started to sweat and shake. Being familiar with the effects of narcotics, I must say the feeling felt a lot like cocaine feels.

The most disturbing trait is that my penis shriveled up like I just got out of the icy cold ocean. I can’t help but think that this product will be taken off the market. The effects are too strong for some minors and may not be safe for people on certain medication which are yet to be known.

And this one:

I tried Redline today while heading to work. I am a huge fan of RedBull & Diet Rockstar. I am 33 years old & in excellent condition.

Having not read the warning label I drank the whole bottle within 5 minutes. Within 10 minutes I was blacking out behind the wheel & shaking uncontrollably. I pulled over at a gas station — I was having difficulty in swallowing and could not stand, breathe or see straight.

I could not even walk for the convulsions. A bystander called the paramedics. Needless to say - my blood pressure was sky high & I thought I was on my way out.

I feel this drink is extremely dangerous & should not be on the market. There needs to be a very visible warning label not to drink the whole bottle for beginners. It has been 5 hours now & I still do not feel normal.

This drink could seriously kill someone if not informed.
I am sorry but I will never drink this again nor recommend it to fellow peers.

As stated it is definitely a high performance drink. and know your body before you take any enrgy drink, supplement, fat burner as all require a little activity then just drink and sit. As a trainer, if you don’t know your body, don’t take it!

Tim July 31st, 2007 8:50 pm

Come on guys. Blacking out? Give me a break. This stuff isn’t all that strong. I drank 2 of the ready to drink bottles with no ill affects. It isn’t all that strong- anyone who freaks out that bad is being more than a little dramatic.

I tried Redline and I’ve had a few times now. The first time I tried it, it gave me a huge energy boost and I felt a little light headed, but it definitely worked. I was a little nausiated at the end, but it went away with food and time. I have had it a few other times because it gets the job done and it’s the only energy drink that I know of that is made from natural substances. I like it and I have recommeneded it to a lot of people who haven’t said anything bad about it at all.

Hey Im writing this to tell all of you that I have done mass amounts of cocaine and meth. But recently Ive been sober for almost 5 years and after drinking a redline I swore I was high agian it had the exact effects on me as speed or cocaine would have. This drink is nothing to take lightly. Have you ever looked at the label what is exactly in the prop. blend thats what i want to know

I have been using redline preworkout for over a year. I started with a half bottle but now drink an entire bottle before hand. I have never blacked out at all but what you have written here is a bit alarming. My gym has also taken it off it’s shelves for similiar reasons.

morbid misanthrope August 12th, 2007 3:37 pm

I’m newly diabetic due to a severe case of pancreatitis brought on by years of irresponsible alcohol consumption. I drink the Red Line energy drink all the time (ooooohhh, green apple flavor!) because it’s sugar-free and carb-free. I really like it, and if it has any effect on me, I certainly don’t notice it. The other day I had two bottles within two hours, and I didn’t feel so much as a tingle. Some people are either way too sensitive or just full of shit, because this stuff isn’t as scary as they’re making it out to be.

“Dude! Dude! One time, I had this energy drink that was so strong, it gave me a heart attack, my hair turned white, and my testicles detached and ran away!”

Grow up.

By the way, that energy drink “Cocaine” isn’t really made out of cocaine.

Yes, everyone’s system is different … here is MY experience:
Yesterday, on my way to my second job, feeling exhausted and totally drained, I stopped at a gas station for an energy drink. “Hmm, Redline, new to me, but worth a try”. I jumped in my truck, drank it down, and headed to work. It couldn’t have been more than 15 minutes later … I no longer felt tired, but I began to shake … so much so that customers were asking if I was o’kay, and I began to sweat. My back became drenched as the sweat poured out, but I also had chills at the same time … Something else I noticed that I haven’t heard anyone else mention was that the palms of my hands turned bright red, like a fire engine! It was the weirdest thing! Others told me that my face and neck turned just as red. I drink a variety of energy drinks and have never experienced anything like this. My boss was concerned … had me sit down, drink water, and eat a bunch of crackers. These effects lasted at an extreme for about 3 hours, then gradually tapered away. It’s funny others have mentioned “blacking out” … I didn’t last night, but all morning long today, I have no recollection of my son and I’s conversations. As he came and went running about, I was almost embarassed to call him and ask him where he was … only to hear “I told you!” I knew he did, but couldn’t remember where for the life of me … Strange, not like my usual self.
As for me, would I drink it again? Probably … only next time I’ll pay closer attention to the VERY FINE print … “Always begin use with one-half can (4 oz.) daily to access tolerance”.
Now I understand why it said “Feel the Freak!”
As far as the Grape flavor, I thought it tasted great for an energy drink!
I am surprised this is sold as simply as it is … I did come home and tell my son it was off limits to him … DEFINITELY NOT AN ORDINARY ENERGY DRINK!!!

I never tried Redline until earlier today.I work early shifts ontop of a long drive in,my day is exhausting.I know friends who have tried it and gave it great reviews so I figured “why not?” I bought it at a gas station, read the label VERY carefully and did as it said.I drank half the bottle waited about an hour and I felt perfectly fine.
About an hour into working I got the same effects as being high on marajuana. My eyes got glassy,my pupils dilated,I was thirsty & somewhat paranoid/shaky.But I was definitely giggly, full of energy & feeling alert. My boyfriend decided to drink the last half & he felt similar;just overall energetic.

About 8 hours later,I got off work, came home & picked up my cousin. She was talking about how tired she was & asked to go get coffee.I told her about redline & she decided to try it.We went to the gas station again, got 2 & went back to my house.Considering I knew how I handled it,I drank it all.I was completely fine.I warned her to drink only half, less even, but she insisted she’d be fine & drank it all.

We went out & we were both just happy & giggly. This was at about 6pm.About 2 hours later, she started to get really nauseous & vomitted for the rest of the evening. My friends & I called poison control & the urged us to bring her to the emergency room immediately. We told them our ages (18 & 19),our bodyweights (120 && 140) & our height (5′6” & 5′5”)…they said doses of caffeine like that can have an almost lethal effect.

My cousin insisted that she was fine,so I just gave her plenty of water, but she kept puking.I just brought her home (its 101 am) & she said shes just really tired & nauseous.

I don’t know quite where I stand.I was completely fine off of 1 1/2 in 12 hours, but she obviously was not.It was,on her part irresponsible to consume that much without knowing what could potentially happen to her,but at the same time,if its even a minute possibility that these symptoms could result,it should be more closely supervised by our government.

We saw so many tragedys with the use of Ephedra, and in the wake of so much media & the constant struggle to find the quickest energy fix, people are getting hurt, maybe even killed.I really, sincerely hope that whoever consumes these beverages knows how their bodies will handle these chemicals & what they should or should not do in the event that they cannot.

I’m not sure if I’ll be quick to pound some more Redlines anytime soon & I beg everyone out there to be cautious.Yes,the temporary energy feels good…but long term, maybe some sleep,a healthy diet & some more closely regulated form of energy (hello, lean protein CHICKEN) would be more beneficial to everyone.

Karyelke August 19th, 2007 3:27 am

I have been drinking redline for about a year now. I work 36 hours straight Friday Mornings into Saturday afternoons. Drinking 1/3 of the bottle enables me to stay awake for the entire duration on my shift. When I am ready to go to sleep I have to take 4 tsp of nitequil just to revese the effects of redline. I experience the shakes but I have never broken out in sweats or turned red like others have experienced. I would recommend this drink to anyone that needs to be on their feet working long hours or anyone who wants to burn a ton of energy off.

JB August 23rd, 2007 4:27 pm

You the Serving Size is 4 OZ not 4ML that would be a drop retard - i would suggest stop drinking all of these drinks and go back to school

Pauline August 26th, 2007 10:00 am

I just tried the REDLINE for the first time. I took half of a bottle like the guy at the Discount Supplements told me over and over and over again. At first I didn’t feel anything I thought it wasn’t working. I worked out and I don’t think it gave me enough energy to finish my work out. I am still feeling the energy but not as bad as ephedra. Ephedra was awesome, this is the next best thing to it. I have a bottle of SPEEDSHOT as well that i will try later this week to see which is the best. It seems to me the people who are getting all the ill effects don’t read the labels like they are suppose to and have never tried ephedra or anything to that effect. Alway read labels and research things you have never tried again. It will save alot of heartache and shivers.

Fra August 27th, 2007 11:12 am

Reply to Ris :

“they said doses of caffeine like that can have an almost lethal effect.”

The LD50 (Lethal Dose 50) of caffeine is 192 mg/kg, meaning that for someone weighing 130 pounds (59kg) it is 11345 mg. You would have to drink 158 Red Bull or whatever other energy drink to get close to this and I doubt that Red Line does…

tolik August 30th, 2007 3:21 pm

WARNIGN: RED LINE will take you down! and out! for good. Don’t do anything that requires alot of physical work when you drink RED LINE. With that said, the only use I found for this drink is while driving, IT IS PERHAPS the best drink that you could possibly find for a person thats doing a very long drive. I drove for a bout 1000 miles stoping for bathroom breaks and refueling, took me about 24 hours, never felt sleepy. Drank a bottle of RED LINE among other protein and light energy drinks. So its good for driving. But thats about it.

At another time, I drank a bottle of RED LINE and decided to measure my blood pressure. I normally get 66/117, with RED LINE i got 94/144 !!!!!!!!! HOLY COW, thats when I took the 6 unopened bottles and threw them in the garbage. I’ll never try RED LINE again. It simply is not worth it. The drink should be named FLAT LINE cause thats what will happen eventually to a person drinking it.

Becky August 30th, 2007 7:55 pm

I tried this drink for the first time today at work and I was advised not to drink the whole thing. After I drank half of it I felt the effects like 20 min later, I was talking fast, sweating uncontrolably and ready to climb the walls. It wasnt as bad but when I started to come down I drank the second half BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!! I felt my heart racing and sweating much worse and fell like hell. I cant sit still and feel sick to my stomach and am surprised I havent thrown up yet. It is 5 hours later and I fell it wearing it off but I still have the shakes and feel like hell. I dont know if i will ever drink this again but IF there is a next time I will only drink a 4th of it and not drink more when it starts to wear off. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone under the age of 18

Becky August 30th, 2007 8:02 pm

I forgot to add that this drink makes you feel like you are high on weed. I was so happy and giggly and could not stop acting like an idiot.

Becky August 31st, 2007 1:13 am

I drank the last half of my redline 12 hours ago and am still wide awake. NEVER AGAIN cause this sucks ass and its 1:16 AM and Im in med school and I have a final exam in 6 hours

Becky August 31st, 2007 6:49 am

Sorry for all the postes but I wanted people to see how it affects you over time. I was up untill 4:45 WIDE AWAKE and now its 6:52 AM and I have my final in 30 min this was the worst experience ive ever had and never will I drink this again. I feel like Im hung over and so sick

Fra August 31st, 2007 1:40 pm

A little surprising from someone in med school… Hope you’ll read the labels before you stick a needle in a patient…

Becky August 31st, 2007 7:13 pm

yea thanks for the advice dude. I just wanted to let people know how bad this was and understand. If it works for you great! I had a cousin die from diet pills at 23 and would hate to see other people be hurt from something so powerful. I did read the lable for the record

Jack September 2nd, 2007 7:46 pm

I’m 15 years old and started working out about 3 months ago. I decided today to try redline because I have read terriffic reviews about redline if you consume the correct dosage. I drank half of the bottle and waited for about 10 minutes before going to the gym. I did’nt feel a sudden burst of energy but did feel more energy and wanted to workout hard. It just gave me more confidence I guess. I did’nt shiver…although very early into my regular workout I began sweating which I normally dont until I get farther into my workout. All the weight lifting and machines I do regularly came easier to me with this new energy I had. I did feel really alert and aware of everything going on. I did all the reps (plus a couple more) that I usually do without struggiling to get the last rep in. I powered thorugh all my exercises and felt great! I sweat a lot and had a 45 minute workout longer than I usually do! I would recommend that redline is good and efficient IF YOUR SMART AND READ THE FREAKIN BOTTLE PROPERLY! Don’t drink more than recommened unless you want a bad reaction.

Nate September 5th, 2007 11:08 pm

I drank 3 from 7-11 on a 3 hour early-morning trip.

meh.

People are over-reacting a bit much…

Dont lie to the kids, cocaine is a hell of a lot more effective then redline… saying otherwise is complete nonsense.

Vish September 6th, 2007 9:26 am

as an experienced bodybuilder, I’ve tried many energy drinks out there and I must say that Redline works in giving you a decent energy high, but it’s not as potent as everyone claims. I’ve downed 2 Redlines before an intense leg workout and they had little effect on me.

My advice, for beginners: follow the label and drink half. For the gym rat, try BSN’s ENDORUSH or NO-Xplode as they work and will kick your a**

Andres September 9th, 2007 11:49 pm

so.. i had one of these a few days ago and im about to chug another but i dunno what people are freaking out about. when i first heard of it, it was rumored that my coworker said 5 minutes worth of instructions in one breath. so naturally i to try it. so i grabbed my best friend “ok lets chug this” his response ” no im scared” . so of course we chugged it. our heart beat rose a bit. bassically the tired feeling went away. and thats about it.. oh and our skin itches for about 5 mins because apparently “a normal response to redline is tingling of the skin” or so the bottle says.

anyway im 5″6 110 and was completly fine aside from the fact i couldnt sleep that night.. i took it again a week later and it gave me a bit of energy. thats about it. since its a fat burner im gonna see if it burns off the body fat that has covered my abs. i guess some people are scared and there bodies are sensitive.. dunno what to say.. i dont mean to sound like “that guy” but take it like a man o.O

Scarlett Flores September 11th, 2007 9:23 pm

I will be honest and first say I read some of the other comments, but not very many, kind of skimmed through some.

BUT, if you follow the link, it is for the bottle of CONCENTRATE! So, yes the serving size IS 4ML. Now, on the ready to drink bottle, yes the serving size is 4oz.

What is it they say about “half the battle”?

5-HTP is a very basic member of the tryptamine(?) family, and it’s a precursor to things beyong Serotonin. Look at Melatonin, for example.

tan chau September 23rd, 2007 9:34 am

this is crack in the can for those who are stupid. anything can be dangerous when misused and abused. and to the guy that drank two within two hours.. you are a beast if you live longer then you already have.have chuged a whole bottle before and my blood pressure was at 160 laying down. good for working out and waking up/keeping

troy September 23rd, 2007 3:44 pm

lol you guys are trippin! i drank 3/4 a bottle and a redbull about 2 hours beforehand and didnt feel shit! keep in mind this is probably my 3rd energydrink in my lifetime!!!! blacking out? come on! i got a little hyper and could barely feel it. there was a moment for like 5 seconds where my body felt pretty good and really energized. i wasnt shaking or anything though and heart wasn’t racing. i then drank another redbull about 2 hours later to keep my ass up. the next morning however, i was extremely dehydrated and had a bit of vertigo.

maybe being resistant to alcohol has something to do with it? because i drink quite heavily. liver is also tolerant to this as well? and maybe the 5-htp has something to do with it. i take 5-htp sometimes because i have messed around with xtc (get my serotonin levels back up) food for thought

Karen September 23rd, 2007 8:27 pm

I think it depends on the person and also what other medications you may be taking. I had the same result with this as cellucor d4. Very bad. I only took one of those pills (1/2 the recommended dose) and I was sweating, chills, sick to my stomach, my pulse was up about 25 beats per minute more than usual. I took it at 8:30 am and it is now 11:30 at night and I’m still feeling a bit off and my chest feels tight. I’m kind of afraid to go to sleep. I don’t think it’s right to make fun of people who have bad reactions. I read all day and one of the problems may be that I take prilosec and allegra d. These medications with the caffeine and other stimulants in the drinks and pills can definitely cause serious risk. Some of the people trying these things are not over reacting. There is a huge risk. Saying not to try it unless you “know your body” really doesn’t mean it’s safe. I’m 40, have safely taken diet pills or energy drinks on occasion and never had this bad of a reaction as with the products that have these ingredients. Everyone has different reactions to different things. I can honestly say I will never go near another energy drink or diet pill again. The scare just wasn’t worth it. What is ok for some, is not ok for all.

Pat September 24th, 2007 11:09 am

Wow… you guys are talking about how you drove for 24 hours straight pumped up with pills and energy drinks…

How about you get off the f**king road and be responsible before your stupid ass drives into oncoming traffic? I mean… the sheer level of stupidity you guys are displaying (in your probably bullshit stories) is more than enough to warrant death, but think of the others on the road. Not everyone is as big of a loser as you folks, so why don’t you just start a meth lab in the woods and blow yourselves up saving the rest of us the worry.

mixer September 27th, 2007 9:12 am

i need to know the effect of redline and alchol. is the same as redbull and vadka or what are the effects. i realy want to try it but it sounds slighlty dangerous. a huge rush with a depressant? some one try it and post it.

Nick September 27th, 2007 2:08 pm

I have tried Redline a few times now, I have had no adverse affects from it. Granted I have a very high tolerance to energy drinks from over use (I once drank between 6 and 10 monsters in a day). I read the label, but knowing my tolerance ignored it and downed the bottle in one gulp. About 20 to 30 minutes later I felt a good rush of energy that lasted maybe 2 hours. After the initial rush I had a decent flow of energy throughout the rest of my work day and then crashed a bit. I did not experience the shakes or sweats described by others. I would suggest this drink for those who just need some energy to push through strenuous work. I think the key is to know how your body reacts to energy drinks.

Moo October 7th, 2007 6:40 pm

3 of my friend and i tried this today. 2 of them were WIRED, but it doesnt really affect me at all. just a slight tingle every now and then and a bad neck later on. what’s everyone so crazed about???

Ryan October 8th, 2007 2:31 pm

OK, after reading all these posts, I figured this stuff would be pretty hardcore. I went to my local gas station, who happens to stock Redline RTD, and bought a can. I made sure to have food in my stomach as stated on the can and drank the whole thing. I really didn’t feel much of anything, but w/e. I went to do my workout and exponentially worse than usual. I don’t see what the big hype over this stuff is but it seems to me to be more of a sedative than an energy supplement. If anyone has any advice on what I can do/take to get a serious burst, then please share. -Thanks
