Quite Possibly the Most Powerful Energy Drink Ever

Seriously, the drink may mean the end of this blog. In the “before time,” conversations generally went a little something like this:

So, what’s a good energy drink in terms of strength?
Well there’s a lot to choose from, based on caffeine content, taurine, ginseng, green tea extracts…
Well… what if I’m just interested in caffeine content?
Well just go to The Caffeine Database and look around!

The point, probably lost, is that there’s a lot of drinks, in varying sizes and caffeine contents, that also contain a lot of other things.

So then this new thing came out. It’s called VPX Redline Fat Burner. Amazon is lacking a little information, so here’s a little more:

Check out this freaky scientific VPX breakthrough: RED LINE®: is the only matrix ever developed to shred fat through the shivering response in the body. By shivering the body burns huge amounts of stored bodyfat for energy in an effort to keep the body warm. That’s not all! In addition to shivering, you’ll also be sweating up a thermogenic storm. The combined mechanisms of these two processes results in unparalleled fat loss!

What fun. Now, it’s pretty obvious looking at the ingredients that there’s caffeine. But get this: all of the aforementioned goodness, and the serving size is FOUR ml. About one TENTH of an ounce. The whole bottle has 240 ml, or 60 servings. Basically, a bottle of this, less than the size of a normal can of coke, WILL kill you. This is nothing to be playing around with.

I have friends. Not just normal friends, mind you. The kind of friends that voluntarily live on the streets. The kind of friends who, when drinking, race to forgetting. The kind of friends who take caffeine pills, ephedrine pills, and asprin.. all at once. One, in particular, drinks and consumes over a gram of caffeine daily, to stave off the headaches. So you know this is a serious review:

oh yeah, it’s definately 90% caffeine. the aftertaste is unmistakeable. the best part is that since i didn’t have my normal “dose” this morning, i probably won’t actually feel sh*t.

[10 minutes later]

the caffeine kicked in a lot faster than i expected. though in retrospect, it normally does when it’s in syrup form and tastes like ass.

feel oddly cold too. took me a minute to realize that while i still was warm, it was that ’shiver’ reflex kicking in. it’s a lot like when
you get a chill at the back of your neck, but somewhat continuous.

So what’s in this magical bottle of awesome? Caffeine, Green Tea, Yerba Mate, 5-HTP (5 hydroxy-1-tryptophan), cAMP, Yohimbe, Evodiamine, and Vinpocetine. And a few other things.

I know, I know, so here’s some more info:

cAMP is cyclic adenosine monophosphate. It supposedly “sparks many intercellular processes.” Whatever that means. Increased concentrations supposedly raise thyroid horomone levels, and help fat burning (would help explain why it’s in a fat-burning supplement).

Yohimbe is a bark extract from a tree in Africa. It’s considered a natural aphrodisiac, and sold here to treat imotency, dialate pupils, and stimulate fat loss. It can also mess with your blood pressure, so watch out.

Evodiamine is derived from some Chinese fruit called Evodia Rutaecarpa. Supposedly burns fat.

Vinpocetine is an alkaloid derived from some periwinkle plant. It is used in Europe, Japan, and Mexico to treat crebrovascular and cognitive disorders. Some people claims it elevates metabolism, but with no proof.

And the interesting one in the group: 5-HTP. I made sure to spell it out, so the smart ones in the group have already figured out the key: Tryptophan. It’s the same stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy, and there’s scientific evidence of it. The 5-HTP compound is sometimes used to treat mild depression since, somehow, it can increase serotonin levels. It can also affect appetite, which may be part of why they put it in here. The other part? When you’re jacking up a drink with this much caffeine, you’re going to get jitters and “scatterbrain.” This may actually cut the disconnected thoughts out and allow you to think normally, but still give you the energy effects of caffeine. Awesome.

Apparently you can buy this stuff at places like Super Supplements, GNC, and even some 7-11s. The concentrate isn’t something you should take a guzzle of. Or even a large sip. If you search on the internet, you can see some people who took the recommended dose, and started blacking out towards the end of a workout. Blacking out. 4 mililiters. Damn. There’s also a ready-to-drink version (I would bet that’s the one at 7-11), and half a bottle is all that’s recommended. Pay attention to it. People are comparing the 1/2 bottle to a full hit of ephedra. Unless you’ve done that before and know the effect it has on your body, don’t go doing anything macho with this one. Go do that with redbull.

Just for poignant measure, look at this review:

I recently purchased the liquid form of redline at a local 7 Eleven store.

It was the first time I have ever drank an energy drink that had such an affect. With in a few minutes , I started to sweat and shake. Being familiar with the effects of narcotics, I must say the feeling felt a lot like cocaine feels.

The most disturbing trait is that my penis shriveled up like I just got out of the icy cold ocean. I can’t help but think that this product will be taken off the market. The effects are too strong for some minors and may not be safe for people on certain medication which are yet to be known.

And this one:

I tried Redline today while heading to work. I am a huge fan of RedBull & Diet Rockstar. I am 33 years old & in excellent condition.

Having not read the warning label I drank the whole bottle within 5 minutes. Within 10 minutes I was blacking out behind the wheel & shaking uncontrollably. I pulled over at a gas station — I was having difficulty in swallowing and could not stand, breathe or see straight.

I could not even walk for the convulsions. A bystander called the paramedics. Needless to say – my blood pressure was sky high & I thought I was on my way out.

I feel this drink is extremely dangerous & should not be on the market. There needs to be a very visible warning label not to drink the whole bottle for beginners. It has been 5 hours now & I still do not feel normal.

This drink could seriously kill someone if not informed.
I am sorry but I will never drink this again nor recommend it to fellow peers.

If you like it, share it..

Well, I’m 5′11″ and about 190 give or take a couple pounds… I drank half a can at 5pm, at 6 I was in a little better mood, that’s all for the night. My good mood lasted about 2.5 hours. No shakes, no chills, no cracked out feeling of super energy at all. Maybe tomorrow I’ll drink a whole can and see what happens… I’m kind of disappointed to tell you the truth…

I have been a so-called energy drink/pill fiend for about 10 years. I’m 23. I have taken anywhere from Vivarin to Coca-Cola to Metabolife all the way to amphetamine and cocaine. I will tell you that none of these legal or illegal substances made me feel as terrible as Red Line energy drink. I weigh 180 pounds and am 5′7″, so you’d think that I’d have to drink a lot to have any effect. Not so. I had 1/2 of a can (not on an empty stomach, either) and before I knew it, I felt my heart would pound out of my chest, I was shaking violently, and I had my boyfriend drive me to the emergency room. It was one of the most frightening experiences I’ve had on any energy supplement.

This drink is so so. I was hanging with my friend and he suggested I try it out since he liked it. I didn’t feel too energized, maybe cause I was tired and I definitely didnt get the shivers. I actually took a nap after I got home. Right now Im thinking of trying two bottles to see if it makes a difference. Im bout 5′9″ and 145 and I’m sure the caffeine wont kill me but maybe some other stuff in it might. Perhaps you could list the amounts at which the other ingrediants are lethal

I tried this a second time yesterday… At 8 in the morning I had a 99 cent bag af Fritos followed by a full bottle of Redline, and 45 minutes later a full can of Sobe No Fear Gold energy drink and I never even got a buzz going… Never felt sick, energized or anything. This stuff has disappointed me. I’m going to drink the rest of the four pack (because the grape tastes good) and I don’t see me buying them in the future. Thanks anyways Redline…

5-HTP is a chemical precursor to serotonin. Overdosing on serotonin is called serotonin syndrome, which is unpleasant and potentially fatal. A lot of the negative reviews of this drink read like serotonin imbalance to me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome

If you drink some witch’s brew of chemicals, you deserve what you get…

If you want to burn fat, the ECA stack is still the best (and cheapest, and medically proven) thing. 200mg caffeine, 25mg ephedrine, 325mg coated aspirin. Take in the morning and at lunch time. Only use for 2 weeks, then take 2 weeks off. It is addictive and stops working if you take it too long. There is a lot of scaremongering in the media about ephedrine, but everyone who has died of it was taking way more than the 25mg 2xday dose, and exercising too hard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECA_stack

You don’t need pills or drinks to lose fat if you are overweight. It is only for people who already have low body fat and want to drop even more than they could naturally. It puts a stress on your cardiovascular system and you should only really be doing it if you are physically fit to begin with.

Hi, I discovered Redline RTD today – I also didn’t bother to read the dosage and chugged the entire thing! Within about 20 minutes my hands and feet were tingling and I could feel ‘the burn’ and rather odd ‘freeze’, I went for a swim and cut 5 minutes off my average time! The effects feel like the flush you get when you take pure niacin coupled with a good dose of ephedra….
DO NOT take this if you are not used to stimulants, you may be in trouble…..

DUDE i love red lines pops m wide awake… i can drink 2 back to back and i up allllllll night… but at times like these its a must… just got to be extremly careful when opperating anything… p.s again whoever thought up redline is amazing

jesse james July 21st, 2007 10:38 pm

so basically i drank a red line a few weeks ago. to me . being used to a normal high dose of caffiene. i didnt feel the energy very much . i drank the whole drink in a few minutes and got the shakes and almost passed out in the mall..this drink should not be recommended for youngsters or unactive people . if you drink one you need to use the energy otherwise you will get the full effects .p.s. im 15 moderation and self control is the key to getting the energy .dont drink to much

I had never heard of RedLine. I stopped for gas on the way home from work and complained to the attendant that I was exhausted. I had just finished my second twelve hour day for the weekend and I still had an hour drive ahead of me plus I had to finish a couple reports that were due tomorrow. I asked him if any of the energy drinks really worked. He suggested that I try the RedLine. He said that he had heard that is was suppose to be very effective. I figured what the heck I would give it try, so I bought a RedLine (8 oz – 2 serving bottle). I read the label and thought that the advertising was a little weird. What did “Feel the Freak- Feel the Freeze – Watch the Fat Drop Off with Ease” mean? It warned to only drink half the bottle if you were not use to drinking energy drinks so I drank half. I was expecting something to happen and after thirty minutes when nothing did, I finished the bottle. An hour later still nothing has happened. It has now been over four hours and I am still fighting sleep. I figured it was just another case of false advertising or much to do about nothing so I decided to check out the net to see how others felt about the drink. I am very surprised to see the postings that I see here. I guess everybody is different. I would not recommend this drink to anyone after reading these posts but now I am curious enough to try the drink again when I am not as tired, just to see if I have different results. It will have to prove to be a heck more effective with the next try to make the drink worth the price.

“fred quimby” you’re an asshole. if you never drank it don’t talk. i drank one bottle on a full stomach one night and was awake the entire night and couldn’t sit still. the next day my friends and i drank them again, this time on an empty stomach.. i couldn’t even finish one bottle (even though it says you’re only supposed to drink 1/2) and i felt nauseaus the entire day and wanted to throw up. my other friend was shaking and throwing up for the next 3 hours. the feeling you get from it is comprable to that when you’re drunk. K you suck fred quimby bye.

brian July 28th, 2007 8:04 pm

i drink redlines often when i feel tired. sometimes it wakes me up a little. sometimes, it wakes me up a ton. but i have to always have the full bottle. sometimes it just does mess with my stomach, depending on how much and what i’ve eaten. sometimes i get the shakes, and sometimes i dont. this isnt that RTD one, which i’d like to note that most, if not all of you are referring to the regular redline that you can find. not the new rtd stuff. which i’d like to get my hands on. regardless, i think it’s more of a pyscological thing for me. i’m still looking for that drink that will be an onlslaught of awakeness..

Rob July 30th, 2007 8:12 pm

Ok, I drank this “crack in a bottle” and within 20 minutes I was feeling paranoid. My hands were shaking and I started to breathe heavy. I felt like I was getting a head rush along with all those crackish characteristics. Theres no way that something that makes you act this way is normal or healthy for that matter. I wouldnt recommend this crap to anyone other than a dope feind who doesnt have the money to get the “legit illegal” form of blow. As a matter of fact I might consider dealing this crap in place of the “real stuff,” Im sure the reaction wouldnt be much different and I can make myself the Pablo Escobar of Redline. In plain those who take Redline, dont be surprised if you—————– RED LINE!

I work the overnight shift (12-1/2)hours As a security guard at a hospital, and I have a hell of a time staying awake! (Guess I\’m not as young as I used to be!) Anyway, I jumped on the \”Energy Drink Bandwagon\” Around two months ago. I\’m a heavy coffee drinker, 3-4 pots a day, so the Red Bull, Monster, Joker, Ect. just didn\’t do it for me. I have been reading a lot of reviews on energy drinks and thought it was time to move to the next level. So one day I bought a four pack of Redline RTD. Before I tell you what I think of the Redline I just want to say That I was not aware that this stuff came in a concentrate form. Reading this now I am really glad I picked the RTD. I would have drank a half a bottle like I have read that most people do, and probably would have been pushing up Daisies! I really like this stuff. I drink a bottle every night at work and it gets me through quite nicely, thank you! The taste kinda sucks, but to tell you the truth, I am not looking for taste. I just want to make it through another boring night shift. I have no problem sleeping when I get home, and I don\’t remember having any side effects. Good stuff. Besides, If something does go wrong, at least I\’m in the right place!!!

Last night I received a frantic phone call from the roommate of a friend asking that I come over to take my friend (Dan)to the hospital as he was convulsive and hyperventilating FOR OVER 5 HOURS! When I arrived, Dan was bent over the toilet, throwing up a nasty mixture of pizza and Redline. He was moaning “Oh, God” in between barfing, all the while shaking and trembling uncontrollably. The roommate and I tried to carry him to my car for the trip to the emergency room but he was as limp as a 150 pound bag of sand and refusing to co-operate, saying “I can lick this” when he was capable of speaking. Knowing him to be a rather hard-core abuser of substances legal and otherwise, we elected to let him stay on the bathroom floor, moaning, shaking, periodically barfing and enjoying the effects of this fine product. He apparently passed out at 2 AM, after 8 hours of chemically induced entertainment. Well, at least for him it was. I wasn’t amused.

Kara July 31st, 2007 9:47 am

I drank a full bottle of Redline a little more than an hour ago and am still not feeling the effects, other than a slight caffeine buzz. However, I was an abuser of ephedrine for years, so it takes a lot to speed me up to that point.

dirk July 31st, 2007 4:26 pm

As stated it is definitely a high performance drink. and know your body before you take any enrgy drink, supplement, fat burner as all require a little activity then just drink and sit. As a trainer, if you don’t know your body, don’t take it!

Tim July 31st, 2007 8:50 pm

Come on guys. Blacking out? Give me a break. This stuff isn’t all that strong. I drank 2 of the ready to drink bottles with no ill affects. It isn’t all that strong- anyone who freaks out that bad is being more than a little dramatic.

Ashley August 1st, 2007 9:54 am

I tried Redline and I’ve had a few times now. The first time I tried it, it gave me a huge energy boost and I felt a little light headed, but it definitely worked. I was a little nausiated at the end, but it went away with food and time. I have had it a few other times because it gets the job done and it’s the only energy drink that I know of that is made from natural substances. I like it and I have recommeneded it to a lot of people who haven’t said anything bad about it at all.

Matt August 7th, 2007 5:53 am

Hey Im writing this to tell all of you that I have done mass amounts of cocaine and meth. But recently Ive been sober for almost 5 years and after drinking a redline I swore I was high agian it had the exact effects on me as speed or cocaine would have.
