Too Much Caffeine Can Land You in Hospital

Reuters mention a review of records at the Illinois poison center. Apparently more than 250 cases were from ingesting caffeine supplements.

“Young people taking caffeine either to stay awake or for a feeling of euphoria, may actually end up in the emergency department more often than we think,” she said, because young adults taken to a hospital for chest pains and heart palpitations are rarely asked if they’ve taken caffeine supplements.

We’re talking about serious levels of caffeine here – like the amounts that come from pills (usually around 200mg per pill). Then, of course, there is the bodybuilding community – a serious bunch of pill poppers.

Check out this FAQ from SciFit caffeine:

Caffeine should be taken approximately Three hours before training for maximum benefit with ample fluids. The recommended dosage is 400mg.-600mg. for a 150lb. Individual.

That’s equivalent to 5-8 cans of Red Bull.

Anyone that uses synthetic caffeine or similar stimulants for body building or general exercise purposes are newbies or uneducated about the “fake” and harmful energy produced from these products. Same as for using it for studying or other activities. But some sites and companies do not care about the end user’s health, just the profit of money. =(

Put it this way, if you wouldn’t take METH for exercise or studying then don’t take CAFFEINE. I mean, small amounts from tea or coffee is ok but not these pills and energy drinks.

I disagree beerman.

Caffeine aids in metabolic functions as well as giving you a nice pick-me-up to run that extra mile. Whether it’s from caffeine pills or coffee, the end result is exactly the same.

i am a bigtime caffeine lover (except for coffee because it costs too damn much) and i gotta say people really should look at warning labels on caffeine products that have them. if they did that they would not have this problem.

If caffeine can kill in large leathel amounts how come you are allowed to buy so many pills or caffeine products at one time? Isn’t it safer to just put a limit on those things? But I’m not saying that the health department needs to go comando or anything I just think there are safer ways of getting that extra boost in your step.

Star, I think they would limit alcohol and cigarettes before they touch caffeine. Who knows though.
