Rockstar Zero Carb: Too Much Caffeine?

During research for the caffeine database, we came across some interesting caffeine levels in Rockstar Zero Carb (check out the Rockstar graph).

This energy drink boasts that it contains 50% more caffeine than other Rockstar drinks.

Rockstar already pack a reasonable wallop of caffeine - so what does the Zero Carb have? A close read of the nutrition label tells us that:

  • 16oz can has 240mg caffeine.
  • 24oz can has 360mg caffeine.

Congratulations Rockstar - you now have what is arguably the most potent energy drink on the market.

Has anyone tried Rockstar Zero Carb? It has a very similar formulation to Sugar-Free Rockstar - in that it is sweetened with ace-k and sucralose (Splenda). However Zero Carb lacks some herbal ingredients such as Panax ginseng, Milk thistle, and Ginkgo Biloba.

You can buy Rockstar Zero Carb here.

You asked if anyone has tried this - I have. By far, it is my favourite energy drink. I’ve even written Rockstar telling them how great of a product it is!

240mg of caffeine is still barely a cup of Starbucks coffee so I don’t feel too guilty when I have one each afternoon. I just consider it my afternoon cup of coffee. Most articles and studies have found 300mg a day to be a safe amount of caffeine.

If you haven’t tried it you really should - It’s (in my opinion) 10 times better than any of the other low-carb drinks - even better than most normal energy drinks.

I just emailed you. We own a website that reviews energy drinks, and I’m always on the hunt for new ones. I just found this drink today, and until I read your site, just thought it was a repackaging of the old stuff. I haven’t enjoyed one yet, but did find this drink along with a new Full Throttle “Blue Demon” at Eckerd Drug store. BTW, the Blue Demon contains almost 1200mg of taurine.

Had my first one this morning. I am usually a sugar-free Red Bull Junkie and this drink tastes much better. Didn’t leave me jumping around the room but definitely woke me up. I think I have found my new early morning wake-up drink. Enjoy.

wazzledoozle November 14th, 2006 9:39 pm

I had a 24 oz last friday, didnt know it was any different from the others (thought it was a new brand name for the sugar free). But it gave an insane kick.

is it more caffeinated than NOS drinks?

Caffeine Fiend November 16th, 2006 12:34 pm

Looking at the caffeine database - NOS is actually a lot more concentrated (25mg caffeine per ounce) — but comes in smaller servings.

I absolutely love zero carb rockstar. LOVE IT!! I do miss the ginseng in it.

Bruce M November 24th, 2006 5:25 pm

As a matter of fact, I just found this one today. I still think that I prefer the taste of No-carb Monster over this one - this tastes a little more “artificial-y” to me, but now that I’ve found out it seems to be top of the heap for caffeine drinks, I might buy it again, anyway.

finally hit stores near me tastes great and the kick it pretty good

Dusty November 27th, 2006 5:14 pm

Welp, I’ve been trying out this drink for a week now and I’m hooked. The taste isn’t the best ever, but def. up there on my scale. The power of this drink is what sold me. It instantly wakes me up but doesn’t make me jittery. The strongest effects last for about 3 hours and after 6 hours I start feeling tired again.

Coolest part is, and I kid you not, during the first 20 minutes after I slam one of these, I literally feel well… happy! For a short period this drink makes me feel straight-up happy. Awesome.

Eileen Lau December 11th, 2006 2:00 pm

I’ve tried it. Definitely tastes good, but it didn’t work for me for some reason. I don’t think the caffeine does much for me, and I think they leave off a few of their other ingredients like Taurine and B-Vitamins. I’ve tried it a few times and always still feel tired afterwards.

mike December 19th, 2006 5:55 pm

Eileen, your body probably has a naturally high tolerance to caffine. this is not a bad thing, it just means that chugging energy drinks doesnt get you bumpin’. if you still want to try an energy drink, then you might want to consider other energy drinks that are not based on caffine. but as you mentioned before, b vitamins are great. they are great for your body. i am the same way, when i drink these i dont feel buzzed. i feel the same. but i still drink them a few days a week because i think they taste good.
if u still want to use caffine to give you energy you might want to consider taking a few no doz or any other type of caffine pills. but be careful not to eat them like candy because it is possible to overdose, although it only happens if you take the entire bottle, you could still be feeling very jitterey.

David January 3rd, 2007 1:51 pm

I agree with Dusty - when I drink it - for the first 30 minutes or so I actually feel happy! This is the only drink that does this - I’m glad dusty mentioned that because I sensed it but just thought I was crazy!

Brad February 20th, 2007 12:49 pm

Best energy drink period.

Amy March 31st, 2007 1:29 pm

I love this type of Rockstar. It has what they call, “wild berry” flavor and I LOVE it! Much better tasting then any other energy drink i’ve tried. It also makes me feel good.

I felt like I was “on” something. Kind of amazing!

Julie April 1st, 2007 2:19 pm

I tried Rockstar Zero Carb today, got a very nice buzz from it and it tastes great! I also got that “happy” feeling after drinking it but I just thought it was because my caffiene addiction was thoroughly satisfied.

Its good, I recommend it before a workout.

Ally April 10th, 2007 8:00 pm

The caffeine kick is insane, but the fake sugar after-taste is a force to be reckoned with.

Kevin April 25th, 2007 5:51 am

This is the first energy drink I’ve ever tried. I really loved it and think it would make a great mixer. The mixed berry flavor was great.

I tried diet Rockstar a couple days later and did not like the taste. Zero Carb is definitely better in my opinion.

champ May 16th, 2007 5:57 pm

i love this drink too, it also makes me happy after i drink it… the only other drink that gives me the happy feeling is the sobe sugar free adrenaline!!

Travis July 31st, 2007 11:14 pm

maybe someone has alrdy named this one alrdy maybe not but theres a drink with a little over 500mg of caffeine, which is much stronger than cocaine(the drink) or spike shooter.

J.D. August 16th, 2007 8:14 pm

THE REASON YOU FEEL “HAPPY” is because of the ingredient Yerba Mate. It makes you upbeat AND focused. Interestingly, my sister went to a seminar on Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) for research. The lecturer — a sufferer of ADD and OCD — said that one of his favorite drinks is Rockstar Zero Carb because of that ingredient! It helps him to focus! So I drank it while cramming for law school finals. And it really does keep you on track!

Roxy August 24th, 2007 7:40 pm

This is by far the best energy drink out there! It’s so refreshing and sweet, I look forward to drinking it in the morning. It reminds me of a berry gum when you first chew it, I love it! Plus it’s sugar free, so I feel good drinking it.

Ru August 31st, 2007 7:42 pm

It tastes like blue-berries, I always get sleepy after drinking it - early crash maybe? Had three today, yuuuum.

Paul September 3rd, 2007 7:39 pm

Rockstar Zero Carb is simply the best of the sugar-free energy drinks I’ve tasted (so far).

Stugatz September 7th, 2007 12:22 pm

As far as taste goes, Original RockStar is still by far and away my favorite, but the new zero carb stuff has an awesome kick, and the flavor isnt bad either. My sister happened to pick up a whole case of each for free at some trade show or something. At first I was disappointed that she only got one original, but now that Ive tried it, Im very glad she got both! Rock on RockStar!!!

the man October 15th, 2007 1:18 pm

How potent is caffeine compared to taurine? Also, is the lack of guarana in Rockstar Zero Carb when compared to Rockstar Juiced compensated by Zero Carb’s ridiculous caffeine content?

I bought one of each of the above in 16 oz cans, cause I need to do a lot of homework today. Just wondering which one is more powerful overall. I mean, I know it’s not aderall or anything, but I guess it’ll do.

Max December 11th, 2007 2:18 am

I’ve never had it, but something important to note about heavy caffeine indigestion is that it depletes the body’s Magnesium and Potassium levels. These are important for smooth heart functions. Depletion in this can cause heart fluttering or palpitations. Which I bet many of you have experienced and passed it off as a random thing. I identified this problem in myself after experiencing frequent palpitations. I then took magnesium supplements and seriously it was just GONE.

Cindy August 19th, 2008 11:23 am

I usually drink espresso drinks & hate the taste of energy drinks. I have tried many because my boyfriend is an energy drink junkie! He recently bought one of the zero carb Rockstar drinks & had me try it. I love it! It tastes like fruit punch, without the vitamin taste of most energy drinks. I can’t believe it has only 10 calories per serving!
