Caffeine in Water Supply: Yay!

America’s obsession with caffeinated products has never been greater.

With the average adult consuming around 280mg of caffeine daily all that caffeine unfortunately isn’t absorbed and used by the body, which is bad news when you need the energy boost.

Look at the bright side, in say another 10 or 15 years or so, you may just be able to turn the tap and get your daily caffeine fix. More and more cities are reporting that caffeine is showing up in their water supply.

How does this happen you may ask? As I said, all the caffeine you consume isn’t absorbed or broken down by the body so some caffeine is present in your piss.  Now imagine the millions of people pissing caffeine (ok, that’s a gross thought) and that urine goes to treatment plants that weren’t designed to get rid of chemicals like caffeine, so it’s released into rivers and streams finding its way back to our taps for consumption.

You certainly wouldn’t get a buzz from the concentration, but it is kind of funny that it’s there. For example, in Erie, PA their water had  up to 60 parts per trillion when tested.

Who knows, maybe as caffeine consumption increases and it builds up in the environment, caffeinated water will flow freely from the silver fountain of energy at your kitchen sink.

nice findings, but be careful- the press gets a hold of this info, then they could throw the anti-caffeine psychos for a whole new loop.

This is great news! For the caffeine obsessed of course. What about people with a low tolerance to caffeine, or heart problems, blood problems? Pregnant woman?

Only problem is, there’s a lot of other stuff present in tap water as well. Stuff that shouldn’t be.

Similar has come about with Prescription drugs, including Script downers, so the “silver fountain of energy” could be a “Silver fountain of Sedation” in some locations….
