Energy Drink Effects Proven False?

energy-drink-effectsIn a landmark study, it was concluded that Monster Energy Drinks have the same effects as Sprite.

Now before you riot, please consider the following……..

This study was a twelve year old’s science fair project, however, it did get published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine. In his study he used Monster Energy drink and Sprite to see if there was any difference in reaction times and what not while participants played video games. The article didn’t go into great detail about the study, but that’s the gist. The kid concluded that there was no significant difference in the results of the two so therefore the effects of energy drinks are false….

Hmmm. Well, I hardly think such blanket conclusions can be made from this type of study. I mean, I can definitely tell the difference in my alertness when I have an energy drink as opposed to a Sprite.  I think the medical community is so desperate to find any negative evidence concerning energy drinks that they would publish a study completed by a 12 year old.

I’m sure the kid did a fine job, but is it the correct scope and size of a study that would be suitable for a medical journal. I don’t think testing your friends and family exactly  counts as a random unbiased test group.

So the effects of my energy drink may not cause me to react faster to kicks received in Mortal Combat, but I’m pretty sure they’ll help with that long road trip!

I almost don’t even want to comment on this because of how ridiculous this story is, but considering how ludicrously false these results are, I can’t believe a father would embarrass his own son so much as to actually have this story published in a science journal.

If my kid did weeks and weeks of research and told me that he has concluded that 2+2 equals something other than 4, I wouldn’t let him post it on the internet let alone a science journal.

My daughter did a science fair project on energy drinks and blood pressure. The conclusion was that blood pressure was not affected by Monster. I did not post it in a science journal though lol.

Apart from how ludicrous this in every way, how about this:

“At the very least, he expected the energy drinks would raise an athlete’s blood pressure or heart rate, but that didn’t happen”

A +1 for us.

P.S do ‘respected journals’ have odd spot columns?
Or perhaps it was ‘take your kids science project and have it published day’ at work.

Although it’s not true, I’m glad Monster is getting knocked down a few notches. I personally don’t find their taste appealing, and am sick of everyone raving about them. Couple that with how a**hole-ish they are about their trademarks, and you’ve got one obnoxious brand. But I agree with EpicWins, the medical and news community is definitely grasping for straws to fight energy drinks. Sorry, conservative PTAs of the world, no increased blood pressure here! Maybe now all these suburban politicians can stop scapegoating energy drinks in an effort to cover up what they’re NOT doing to combat the real problems like drugs, violence, and alcohol in schools.

Opinions on Monster vary a lot from person to person. I love the taste of original Monster and every other drink they have made (with the exception of MXXD). They are definitely the most innovative and unique (the whole nitrous line). I agree that the story is completely ridiculous. It doesn’t matter how well researched a study is, it can’t disprove an obvious fact.

“These effects have been borne out by research that shows that caffeine use (whether in tablet form or not) results in decreased fatigue and increased attentiveness.”

THERE YA GO LITTLE KID, CONTRADICTED!
