Illicit Cola: Its Good to be Bad?
I’ve just committed an Illicit act….and I liked it!
Illicit Cola made by Demon Energy is a cola drink with some deep dark secret ingredients from deep in the “darkest recesses of South America” and now available to you in New Zealand.
With their girl about to kiss a girl, while a guy watches, suggestive website and a big as slogan “It’s good to be bad“, I’m not sure what they’re selling, but I feel dirty none-the-less.
Taste
Ah…this is a hard one…Cola, seems to come to mind. Illicit isn’t as good as Coke, but has good cola flavor with some other taste thrown in I couldn’t quite place. Wait, that must be the deep, dark secret ingredient!
Ingredient
Ok, I’ll cut to the chase. The sercet ingredient from South America is Yerba Mate which is why the flavor is slightly tweaked from standard cola. That’s really it and the caffeine content isn’t disclosed.
Effect
Illicit isn’t an energy drink, but a higher caffeinated soda. Something in this drink made my throat and esophagus feel strange which could have been the yerba mate as I haven’t had many drinks with that ingredient in it.
Verdict
Not a bad product as far as cola drinks are concerned, but Illicit in my opinion has gone a little overboard with the marketing of this drink. Come on, It’s just cola with yerba mate in it. It’s not illegal, forbidden, disapproved, unlicensed, or rebellious as the can defines.

My guess is that something else in the drink made you sick. Yerba mate is not going to make you sick( it won’t make your throat hurt)–unless they put something weird in the yerba mate. Actually, yerba mate is very good for the body as it is very health generating! For the record, while yerba mate will give you that “awake and alert” feeling, but it will not give you any of the negative effects of caffeine. This is because what really is in it is mateine, which is similar to caffeine–they’re both xanthines, but again, mateine is completely safe, without the adverse effects of caffeine. There’s some great information about yerba mate at http://fullyflexed.com/yerba-mate
@yoda, while I agree in general Yerba Mate is great, healthy etc. You can’t assume that no one would have adverse reactions to it.
Tbh I’d say it’s the excess caffeine levels in combination with the sugar. I’m sure you drink a lot of energy drinks and such, but still. I’m basing this off of personal experience. I’ve never had that happen with an “energy drink” except Jolt Cola. Which, exactly as you said, is more a a high caffeine soda than an actual “energy drink.” Just my two cents <3

Yerba mate makes me feel sick and yeah it does hurt my throat too. I’ve had it in one of the kinds of Amp energy drink. I forget what color. I just drank 3 Max Velocity drinks and its only 10:51 am. O_O I’m so happy.
