About Energy Fiend
Caffeine Amounts
Not all beverage manufacturers list caffeine amounts on the nutrition label. The US FDA requires caffeine to be listed on the ingredients list, but, as caffeine is not a “nutrient” the exact amount does not have to be listed (FDA). This presents a problem for consumers as caffeine, can have detrimental affects at higher levels. EnergyFiend maintains the largest database of caffeine information on-line, adding new items as they hit the shelves. The caffeine amounts are carefully sourced (see Caffeine Source Reference Guide).
Is This Site For or Against Caffeine?
Neither and both. Caffeine is among the most researched substances in the world. Like many foods and drinks it has both positive and negative effects. It is regarded as safe, and in moderate amounts can provide a number of protective effects, particularly in the area of brain health. However in higher amounts, caffeine can be harmful.
Is Death By Caffeine For Real?
The Death by Caffeine calculator started as a fun tool. However it is now a serious reminder of the toxicity of caffeine in higher dosages. People have died after overdosing on caffeine pills, and overconsumption of high-caffeinated energy drinks has made headlines over the last few years. It is worth noting that alarmist media reporting tends to distract us from the bigger drinking issue – overconsumption of alcohol – something that leads to more deaths than caffeine ever will.
