The IFIC has published a large review of caffeine research. It’s conclusion:

Moderate intake of 300 mg/day (about three cups of coffee per day) of caffeine does not cause adverse health effects in healthy adults, although some groups, including those with hypertension and the elderly, may be more vulnerable. Drivers: Coffee Better Than Sleep

French researchers have tested the driving performance of sleep-deprived drivers.

They gave the drivers decaf coffee, regular coffee, or allowed them to have a 30-minute nap. They then counted the number of line crossings during a driving test.

The decaf drinkers racked up a total of 159 line crossings while drowsy, compared to just 2 line crossings during the daytime
