Energy Drink Ingredients
Wine is grapes. Sure, there’s a lot of different kinds, but who really cares? Beer is hops, barley, water–again, pretty boring. Anyone who’s reasonably intelligent would look somewhere to see what they’re putting in their body. Especially if it makes you warm and tingly. Here, then, is your research, handed to your ass on a silver platter.
- Caffeine: The most common stimulant, found in coffee, Coke and Mountain Dew. Found in much higher quantities in energy drinks. Most energy drinks contain between 70 and 200 mg. A 5 oz cup of coffee contains 110-150mg for drip, 65-125mg for percolated, and 40-80 mg for instant. Dr. Pepper gives you 61mg, and a can of Coke provides 50mg. A full can of RockStar has 150mg. A lot of people experience side effects above 200mg, but I’ve personally known people that can handle a full gram at a time. They looked like an ADD monkey having a seizure, but they didn’t die. I don’t recommend it.
We’re tracking the caffeine levels of virtually all energy drinks. Go knock yourself out.
- Taurine: Taurine is an amino acid that your body naturally produces. It helps regulate heartbeat and muscle contractions, and energy levels. Usually your body makes enough that you don’t need to supplement. It’s thought, but not proven, that under “stress conditions” like illness, physical exertion, or injury, the body does not create enough and supplements can help. Taurine might be a “mild inhibitory neurotransmitter”, some studies show it helps with excitable brain states. While this isn’t exactly what we want, maybe it helps level us out so we function better with elevated levels of other stimulants.
- Guarana: Guarana comes from plants in South America. Amazonians have used it for a long time to increase alertness and energy. It’s more dense in caffeine than coffee beans (3-4% vs 1-2%). It’s not just called “caffeine” because it contains a couple other things: theobromine and theophylline. They’re found in coffees and teas, and are known stimulants. Marketing retards will sometimes call this one guaranine, as if it’s something different. It’s not.
- B Vitamins: These are essentially the things that help you convert crap to energy. Crap like sugar, which is found in abundance in energy drinks. The jury’s still out on whether or not they increase energy levels via supplementation, but they will sure help warding off the hangovers when you mix that energy drink with alcohol. Search the interweb for info on proper dosing of the different vitamins.
- Ginseng: Ginseng, an adaptogenic herb, is known to increase energy, has some anti-fatigue components, and supposedly relieves stress. Right now it’s suspected that gingseng helps stimulate the hypothalamic and pituitary glands, which then secrete something called adrenal corticotropic hormone. With a name like that, it can’t possibly be bad. Ginseng is nothing that’s naturally created by your body, so having this in your drink certainly won’t hurt. 200mg/day seems to be the standard dose, but you can safely take up to 2700mg.
- Ginkgo Biloba: It’s suspected that ginkgo biloba is the longest-living organism on this planet. Using the theory that you get something’s (or someone’s) powers by eating the brains, eating the oldest thing on the planet is probably a good thing. Or maybe it’s such a hardy mofo that it’ll kill you instantly. But that’s never been the case. It helps memory rentention, concentration, circulation, acts as an anti-depressant, and even shows signs of helping people with Alzheimer’s. The German government recognizes it as something that helps with memory loss, concentration, and depression. That’s some kick-ass stuff right there. 60mg is a standard supplementation dose, and you can easily take 240mg. If you don’t get this with your drinks, I’d highly recommend supplementing your diet with it.
- L-Carnitine: An amino acid usually created by your liver and kidneys, this stuff helps up your metabolism and energy levels. Because of the way it interacts with your body, it may act as a thermogenic and help increase weight loss and endurance during exercise. The jury’s still out on whether or not you need to supplement unless you have an unusual diet, but you can take 2-6 grams without worry. Make sure you get L-Carnitine, which is the type your body creates and can use. D-Carnitine is “inactive” and may actually hurt endurance levels. Some people take this to support their heart, so putting it in an energy drink that increases your heart rate… good stuff
- Sugars: Glucose is the body’s preferred fuel. That’s why you get hyper with a lot of sugar. Energy drinks contain a ton of sugar. Therefore, energy. It’s a carbohydrate, and a lot of exercise regiments suggest a good dose of sugar for workouts lasting more than an hour. A lot of athletes take it in the form of rice or noodles, so they have timed absorption. You can take a bunch of this easily… 150 grams in your system might get you wired, but probably won’t hurt you.
- Antioxidants: Antioxidants are things that help your body gracefully recover from the damage of free radicals. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, so claiming that your energy drink has a lot of antioxidants is like saying you’re buying really expensive orange juice. But they’re good, they help fend off illness and prevent cellular damage. Vitamins C and E, Vitamin A (aka retinol, beta-carotene), and selenium are all antioxidants.

I just tried upshot last night for the first time. Best results I’ve ever gotten from an energy drink. I do a lot of driving late at night twice a week and I always start dragging around midnight. When I fueled up my car I bought one and the rest of my five hour trip was easy, my eyes didn’t feel heavy once, warning however, mocha flavor is horrid! Stick with fruit or Kola.

i drink on average 11 different energy drinks a day…
i sleep once a week for about 5 hours, sometimes twice a week..
i also ingest a slew of sedatives and alcohol at the same time.. i love my liver

the energy drinks if people are going to sell them should have an age limit on them like 21 and a warning. that can cause heart problems or people with heart problems should have this drink.. If something happens to one of the kids that get the hands on this drink they have something horrible like a seziure or heart attack that the company’s get sued for bringing this drink out. this is like a illega drug comming out the kids are getting it for a quick rush.. Someone needs to do something now before someone dies with drinking to much or have health issues and not knowing what this drink can do to you…………………

seriously, go complain about it on a forum where people care about your opinion. we are all here because we like and want to know about energy products. you are here because you think what we consume is a harmful drug. go complain about it on an anti-drug website. we know caffeine is a drug, as are the other stimulants above. LEGAL DRUG is the key phrase though, just like alcohol. alcohol has an age limit, caffeine doesn’t. you think caffeine should have an age limit, then find other people who think the same and start a movement. just don’t drink any coffee while you are writing your propaganda speeches against us, though, or you’ll be exposed as a hypocrite.

Energy drinks only make a negative difference. Remaining hydrated keeps you properly energized. Also maintaining a solid sleep schedule makes you much more efficient and ends up keeping you more energized than energy drinks. Energy drinks do nothing but overwork the heart, mess with blood sugar levels, and add chemicals to the body it doesn’t need. And I don’t like coffee either. Pop also sucks.

Maintaining a solid sleep schedule? Hard for those of us who work and go to college at the same time. Coffee in the morning for class and an energy drink or Starbucks in the afternoon. I work 32 hours a week in the Aerospace Industry as a design engineer and am taking 13 units studying Mechanical Engineering. I am also involved in a senior design project which involves designing and manufacturing a Formula 1 style race car. So I don’t get much sleep at all, lucky to get 6 hours and average 4-5. I need to keep my mind sharp for work and homework and energy drinks do the trick. Just drink double the amount of water per energy drink that you have. That’s what I do to keep my body hydrated properly. Just my $0.02

energy drinks rock mah socks
Energy drinks are no more harmfull then popular cola drinks. Sure problems can arise from drinking too much, but hey the same goes for water. Drink too much water and your kidneys will shut down. Then, you die. ^_^
i’m a senior in high school and ive been drinking energy drinks since i was a sophmore. most kids as you think are as dumb as we seem. we know wut these things do to people, but if you look at those cases, most of them have drunk multiple cans in one day. we know they cause heart problems, but when you go to school, work, and do things outside of school, most kids are lucky to get 3 to 4 hours of sleep most days of the week. if some kid gets heart problems, or gets sick, they know wut this drink does and that they shouldnt do straining activity and should drink lots of water. we are not as stupid as most people think we are
I went on my bus today with an energy drink, and I couldn’t believe how many people gawked and stared at me, and told me, “do you know how bad those are?” but they don’t even know the reasons why they think that. It really bothers me, because if people are going to accuse me of having something bad I would like to hear their reasoning. I also think people like to zoom in on the negatives effects of things and zone out all of the positives, because we all know that negatives are more fun to agree and talk about! So a couple of kids drink too many of them and like get heart problems. That’s probably their own fault for drinking 300 cans in 2 hours. What did they think was going to happen? So one person does something idiotic and they blame the drink and companys fault, because if they probably used them how they were suppose too then there wouldn’t be a problem, and energy drinks get the bad name. Its like one person wrecks it for the rest of us. Its not fair. I know life isn’t fair, but come on people, lets not blame the energy drink!
I have a heart problem and ive had it since i was born but yet i will sit here and drink 3 energy drinks a day and it doesnt make my heart beet faster or anything like that and thats mainly because i dont have the same effects to caffeine as others do. and no matter what all the ingredients are i will still drink as much energy drinks as i drink now and nothing will stop me because caffeine is like crack for me. its so addicting.
its funny how energy drinks get demonised, yes to many can be bad but there are worse things like alcohol and mc-fatass burgers or all the processed foods so commonly consumed.

3 eat proper meals
4 enjoy
the rest that make this some sort holy crusade watch what they eat chances are its all processed crap or they are some lazy fat ass scared they may drink an energy drink and lose 1/16 of an ounce off thier ass because they cant sit still.
There are many risks to drinking energy drinks. I am 17 years old, and I drink one once in a while, but only when i need it… not to mention the fact that i DON’T ever really truly need it and neither does anyone else, but it has become this addicting, almost robot-like reaction to tiredness. I often here “I am so tired… I am going to go to the store and get an energy drink cuz if i fall asleep again in math……” etcetera..
It’s the caffeine that’s addicting. It’s a proven fact. The information is somewhat hard to find, but it’s true. Look it up.
