Energy Shots: The New Black?

energy-shotsIt seems this year energy drink review requests have been dwindling.

However, I’ve been getting  ever increasing requests to have energy shots reviewed.

The Convenience Store News just reported that sales of energy shots have doubled in 2009, with more and more consumers choosing them over the traditional 16oz energy drink than ever before.

Energy shot sales were at 270 million in 2008, but are expected to double that in 2009 with around 700 million in sales. In 2008 energy drink sales only saw a mere .09% increase in sales from the previous year, while energy shots saw and 179% increase in sales.

So what does this mean for the industry? Have energy drinks met their match when facing their much smaller cousin? Many enjoy the convenience of these shots, but will convenience make up for the often less than pleasing flavor?

The shot still has a way to go as energy drink sales topped 3.5 billion dollars last year.

What do you think? Will energy shots replace your energy drinks as a way to get your fix?

I am back in the game. Bring it on. I will be starting to get a list together on what is in my local 7-11 detachment and testing them myself. It’s like an antique store and the shots are the trinkets.

Oh it’s good to get caffed up again.

I don’t think energy shots will ever replace 8oz. or 16oz. energy drinks for me. If I’m staying up all night gaming having a Cocaine, Bawls, or Monster is like a two-in-on energy drink and soda. Energy shots are too expensive anyway, especially since I don’t mind drinking up to 16oz.

Energy shots are good for people who like the small size and convenience of them, but for me, one of the best things about energy drinks is the unique taste. I can’t see myself ever being in a situation where a shot is worth paying more for, especially because there are so many sugar-free energy drinks. I do like the great kick of the Rockstar shots though.

  • I agree with Nick on this one. I’ve tried some Energy shots, most taste terrible and cost more than an energy drink and while the kick may be just as good as a decent energy drink, wheres the value really?

I can get a 16 ounce can of Monster or Rockstar as low as 2 bucks (or 1.50 when on sale) and I get a full 16 ounce beverage that packs energy, tastes decent, and is an actual drink. The shots are pounded down and gone in 2 seconds and cost almost double in some cases.

Plus like Evan stated, low carb and sugar free energy drinks are widely available, so the sugar free argument for energy shots doesn’t make a difference.

I think that the shots are really for a different segment of the “energy culture.” Shots are very instant where an energy drink you can sip on for a while. You know, getting your energy buzz a leisurely fashion. I don’t think energy drinks will be replaced, but I think a lot of people have the idea in their heads that all drinks taste like Red Bull, so if it tastes bad why not get a shot? It’s less to drink.

I agree with the majority here. Shots will never replace energy drinks for me. I get that concentrated caffeine has an appeal, but shots cost more than drinks and I like the taste of energy drinks! There are many very good ones.

    I Agree-gree!

i’d rather take the time to enjoy an energy drink, than have a shot of a horrid tasting, wallet exploding energy shot. wheres the fun in that? only shots ive seen about here in western australia is 6 hour annnd BadBoy energy shots. and they’re ICKY!
i’ll have an espresso shot before i have a energy shot. i can have those all day for free at work.
Rockstar Juiced and Mother for the win! xx

  • I agree that energy shots don’t taste as well, but they travel better and don’t have to be refrigerated since you can shoot them and be done. I’m an energy drink fanatic-one a day at least! Check out Verve!

  • I like to drink slowly and enjoy also! Although, the shots are better when the weather’s really cold. I wonder when the “truly healthy” shots will catch on to such extremes?
